You only have to look at my profile to understand my opinion, certainly if cash is no issue.

From my perspective and having had a club custom made for me albeit a persimmon wood in the 80's, I think that in this day and age there is not the need for custom made and that were you to go to a reputable fitting establishment (not just AG or similar) you would find the clubs to suit your game. Most of te top names will give you everything you need. In fact if you can get to somewhere like Callaway at Chessington or Ping, Mizuno etc the custom fitting process is like being treated as a tour pro.

I guess if you wanted to take it a step further, you could get the loft, lie, shaft flex and kick points suited bia custome fitting and then get the shafts pured.

All of the above have merit, particularly if you can get to the manufacturers place of business.

I went with a pal to try out his prospective new club on tuesday. In thePro shop I expressed interest in the new TM R7 TP irons and asked about the possibility of a deal. The assistant said they would do them for £550 but for that price the pro would accompany you to the TM HQ and get you fully fitted. I was really impressed, this is just how you get and retain customers.

The club was Weybrook Park BTW just north of Basingstoke, well worth a visit for the course and the welcome.

I don't know about custom made clubs...but the few I've seen have been a bit cheap (i.m.o.). This wouldn't extend to the sort of thing Nico has of course. It's difficult to imagine a more quality product than a Titleist/Ping/Mizuno/TM/etc. forged club. One of these sets "properly" custom fitted (at an approved centre) would be my choice.

PS.....hoping not to re-ignite the whole debate.....I watched a fitting session (not for the 1st time) the other day and I simply cannot believe the lack of honesty some range pros use when advising customers. The guy was simply awful (claimed to play off 8) and a couple of lessons would/could have changed his swing for the better (I've never seen anyone stand so close and pull the hell out of everything). The pro was trying to custom fit with the ball almost coming out of the hosel and the toe hitting the ground.......WHY? 10 minutes standing properly and and re-assessing a useable swing would have changed the whole set up.

Dave, you've not lived, mate ;) Iron heads from Wishon, Maltby, KZG etc are every bit as good and more than the above guys. Most of them are made in the same factories!

Sure, don't get me wrong. The top end stuff is absolutely cracking. The problem I have is with some of the cheap kit I've seen in folks bags......yuk......

I certainly wouldn't want to tar the same brush.....
