Hi. Was wondering how much are custom fitted clubs to buy I know there's all kinds of prices but just wondering a average price & anybody had it done & is it worth it?
Thanks. Jay.

I'd say so, even though I'm off 22 I found it worthwhile.

I was fitted for my irons at the old Mizuno centre at Cumbernauld. Having a choice of shafts to try, the data from the trackman, and the analysis of the data by the fitter is very useful. Even a static fit showed that I required longer irons than standard.

My driver fitting was eye opening though. I thought that my old driver was perfect for me, but again the data from trackman showed how it could be improved.

Usually doesnt cost you anything extra for custom fitting unless you want to upgrade grips/shafts or make changes to the length of the club. I was just fitted for my Mizunos and I managed to get a discount on the standard club price even with upgraded grips. Price depends on what clubs you buy. Definately worth it though

i think the only trouble with custom fit is at amateur level you never know what swing is going to turn up on the day, so if you just relied on that one session you could end up with the completely wrong clubs/shafts etc.

If you are just starting out i would go with a 2nd hand set of just standard ish and get used to playing, have lessons and then go from there.

Cool. Is the length and lie correct before you test the shafts? that seems pretty much essential to me.

For example of If was 3 flat, do they give you a head that is 3 flat and insert the different shafts into that. do they have a pile of heads with the different lie angles on them. 9 heads or so?

I can't quite remember Gary. Length was definitely the first thing that was checked and they were able to give me a club a half inch longer to test, but I think lie was done on a lie board with impact tape on the bottom of the club. Can't quite remember if they changed lie angle at the time.

My point is s unless you have the correct lie in the head you are testing, it makes it impossible to tell if one shaft or another is actually improving the dispersion.

True, but the lie adjustment that was suggested at the fitting was the same as had been suggested for my current (at the time) clubs, so figured that it was accurate. I understand that you can't really compare one manufacturer's standard specifications with another's, but it made some sense at the time :D

As far as dispersion was concerned, my old Wilson Di7s with the correct lie were worse than the JPX800s that were (potentially) 1 degree out.

Plus, the Mizuno fitting was free, so why wouldn't I use it :)

In the vast majority of cases the clubs are the same cost whether they are customer fitted or not. So if you are going to buy some new ones it makes sense to get them fitted. Yes as others have pointed out, all you are getting is the best set of clubs for your swing on that day, fitting is not the silver bullet and that swing may well change on a daily or even shot by shot basis. But some of your fundamentals like grip size and length of shaft should not change so it's good to get them right.

Taylormade and Callaway had flat and upright heads to give you what suited when I was fitted.

Depends on the manufacturer, where you go and what you go for. I've had a fitting and it's an enjoyable experience but I've also bought off the shelf. Is it worth it? It depends but I definitely think there is something in it for most people off most handicaps but definitely worth going to a proper fitter and not a high street golf store
