I am still out on this. Have been c/f by titleist, and have also bought off the rack. Can hit stiff, or regular, no worries. Can't hit rifles though, so project x are out.

Currently using two sets, titleist zb, ttdg r300 plus 1/2" 2* upright, and Adams cb2, stock length kbs tour 90 stiff, standard lie. Can play similar golf with either set. Got the titleists in the bag at the moment.

If you are are 6 3, you probably do need longer shafts. At titleist, this still wasn't a measurement for me, it was a judgement. I looked more comfortable with longer shafts. Apparently. That said, the Adams clubs are longer to start with.

If you are 6'3 then you are going to get more out of having custom than a lot of people who are around the industry standard. I got fitted by the TM tour van on one of their demo days I ended up with 1" longer and 1 degree upright, I am also 6'3. Trust me you will benefit from having it done. If I use a standard set of clubs, yes I can hit them no problem, but not with the same flight and most definitely not as easy and consistent as my fitted clubs.

I mentioned on a previous thread last week about the AG clowns and their fitting system. Tried to fit me for TM using a tape measure and a Ping chart.......I only hit a ball after asking if I could get one taped up, they did not offer me it..... that is how I ended up at the TM demo day getting fitted. I will never walk into one of these shops again for golf clubs.

My wife booked me in for a custom fit before Christmas and told me to get some new clubs as a Christmas present, I do love her!!

Well, anyway, I went for the fitting and was impressed with the set up and came out with the undoubted facts that I needed 3/4 inch extra length and stiff shafts. My lie angle was fine.

I left having looked at clubs but not having chosen a set.

I then spent a couple of days in Manchester doing all the x-mas shopping and stopped at the American golf there to look at some sets. Having got speaking to the manager, I picked three clubs to take out onto the range to try. Taylormades, Calloway Razr and Mizuno Jpx 800's. Before I went out however he told me that the custom fitting was a waste of time as I had been swinging with "off the shelf" clubs all my life and why would I want to try and re-invent my whole swing and stance now, especially being a 17 handicapper. If I could hit these clubs well, what was the point.

I took this on board and went out onto the range with three different 6 irons.

The Taylormade was the first up and I tried and tried but just couldn't hit it. Topping sclaffing and shanking all over the place. I put it to the side and thought I'd try it again with a few balls at the end, telling myself that I wasn't properly warmed up..., The Calloway was next and I hit tem fairly nice and they felt comfortable, I've always used Calloway I have x-14's just now, Next was the Mizuno's and I must tell you I was really impressed they felt amazing and will probably be my club of choosing.

At this point the manager came out to ask how I was getting on and I told him as above. At this point I took the Taylormade back out for the last few balls and still couldn't hit the thing. It was at this point that he told me...

The Taylormade was a 1/2 inch longer than the others and that that was why I was having difficulty in using it and that this was proof that I shouldn't be changing the standard clubs to the fitted.

I am now in a massive quandry as in what to do. I appreciate that I probably would have compensated by gripping the club further down rather than right at the top as I usually do had I know but still it got me thinking.

Any good advice on how to proceed?

The manager taught you something very important which will help you for the remainder of your golfing days:
"Don't ask for advice from AG."

Go to a professional who knows what they are talking about.

No it won't

In some cases, yes it definitely can. My best friend, playing at Hindhead, went down from 20 to 11 in just over a year. Most due to a brilliant Titleist driver fit - it added 30 yards initially and then another 20 once he squared his shoulders through the extra confidence he was getting. These extra yards off the tee mean less stress on the long game and hence the scores went tumbling.

We'd been badgering him to get rid of his crappy off-the-shelf Nike thingy and finally he took the plunge. Now he needs to change his irons... ;)
