Please can you lot give me you opinion. I've got an opointment next week to get custom fitted for a new set of Irons. I've been this morning looking at whats available> the place is a specialist fitter for Cobra, Titliest, Mizzy and PGA. I really like the Cobra S9's, feel good and look good. They have shown me a set approved by PGA and said they are great for the money £249.00 for custom fitting 3-sw +1,3 & 5 wood. I'm no snob by a long way but I do tend to buy name rather than price. The cobra's are £399.00 and by the time I get a bag to match will be a lot more.
Has anyone got, used or got an opinion on thr PGA clubs?
What woudl you do?

There have been a few posts on custom fitting, including one from myself not too long ago.

IMO, if you are wanting to improve your game and have long terms goals in mind, then getting fit is the way forward. I am sure most other forumers would agree.

What you get custom fit for and who fits you is a matter of debate.

I guess the budget for the sticks is a big factor and all would say buy what you can comfortably afford. That seems a fairly obvious statement to make, but you may be better actually buying clubs you will use as opposed to an "off the shelf set" which it sounded as though the PGA's were. To be honest, if you ever hit a 3 iron you will prob be in a minority as most low irons have been replaced by hybrids / rescues. Likewise with the wedges - alot of people seem to carry 3 wedges now - PW and then two more of varying lofts (mine are 51 and 56). Personally, I wuold look at individual clubs and buy on a club by club basis.
Again it comes to budget and what you want out of your game.

In terms of fitting, if you go for Mizzys for example, they have a centre in Surrey for fitting, I think Callaway are down that neck of the woods too. Not having been there (my pro fit me), I can't comment, but other forumers have given great write ups.

Hope this helps and good luck with your choice

I had a fitting at AG last weekend and they where great, I got my driver in July and the service was sh**e, so its up to you, if you feel the sales person is doing their job and installing faith in them then go ahead, if not walk away and find someone else.

Cheers Mark. Whats a 3iron, come to think of it whats a 4 & 5. Anythign lower than a 6 is sliced out of sight. I'm well and truly sold by the utility

Callaway are based at Chessington. To be honest if you are going to be custom fitted go with the club that works best for you and fits your budget. I'd ditch a 3 iron though and look at a hybrid instead as they are easier to hit and more versatile

Two & slighly conflicting bits of advice I have for anyonegetting custom fitted.

1) Go with an open mind. In other words, be prepared to try anything & everything that is put infront of you by the fitter.

2) Know your own mind. In other words, don't let yourself be talked into something you don't really want or to you feels wrong, or for that matter & for the vain amoungst us... just looks wrong.

Oh, one other (third)bit of advice enjoy the experience & relax...

I find that if you go to AG or similar for a custom fitting it is best to insist that the store manager does it. I've had shop assistants try and fit me and although they have been shown the basics, they tend to be trying to flog the best mark up makes (Nicklaus in my case). At least with the store manager you get someone who (should) knows what they are doing and you have the opportunity to have a chat and maybe work a deal

you say you're going for a set of irons but are looking at a 'starter' set including woods. Is this what you want?

if it were me, and the Cobras suited best, I'd get the irons and a new bag could wait. after all the wrapper doesn't get the ball any further.

Cheers Viscount,
The oen word you have said has made my mind up. I'm not after a starter set. I'm off 10 using Callaway at the moment so I don't want a starter set.

Cheers for that

but it does help get all the clubs round the course at the same time.

I'malways a bit suspect about most starter sets. The woods generally are not the best. though I did see at the Belfry they were doing a special on Wilson Staff & the included driver was a Dd6+. The price for what you get was good too. So that's the exception to the rule.

but that was a special so wasn't really a starter set.
what you say about starter sets is true though, usually the irons aren't bad but the woods are a bit wobbly.

Agree with this advice. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience when I went for a custom fitting last year. I wound up with Cobra clubs after going thinking I would buy Calaway or TaylorMade.

I didn't buy from the guy doing the fitting as he was way too pushy - "I'm not a salesman, I'm here to find best clubs for you" - "so you're taking them today right".

Nope, now I know what's best I can go have a look around to see what the best price is........

I think this guy is alright. He runs a driving range with teaching area and club fitting. He's got some state of the art equipment which only a few places in the country have. He also has a monthly column in an alternative golf mag.
I've spoke to him a few times and a mate has used him for fitting before and gave him rave reviews.
