Sam and I planning something a little bit "different" for holiday next year, and a good friend of ours has recommended Cuba as a destination.
We'd never considered Cuba before, but looking at prices, a two week all inclusive out there seems very good value for money. Certainly well within the budget we had set ourselves.
Have found a pretty good deal at a hotel in Guardalavaca, but know absolutely nothing about the place.
Has anybody on here been, and if so can you give us any pointers, recommendations etc. please?
Looking to go end of April, beginning of May.
Any advice (sensible) would be welcome.
Cheers

Morning smiffy, when I went to Cuba, I just loved it. It was fantastic. Would I go back tomorrow. Deffo.
We stayed in Varadero ( custom built resort) which has a golf course which was built by the DuPont family in the 1930's when America was in love with Cuba.
Whilst staying in Varadero we booked three nights in Havana in a Iberostar hotel. It was a cheap as chips and an oasis in a desert. You can get there by booking tickets on tourist coaches. Don't think you can or would want to use local buses. Havana really is stuck in the 60's and 50's and is stunning for it. Quick question if flying to Cuba and then onto Guardalavaca, where do you fly to. Havana to Varadero was a two hour hike so it could take an age to get to Guardalavaca.
It was odd having evening meals then having power cuts, lights on lights off, lights on etc etc. But some people when talking at the airport struggled to get knives and forks at dinner time. It was excellent

Went there earlier this year, 4 nights in Havana ( which is enough to see everything imo ) and then on to varedero.
Great holiday.
Would suggest you go march/April as may be too hot if you go in May.

We went to Cayo coco a few years ago , the place was absolutely brilliant people very friendly . It is one of those places i think you need to see before the Americans get to spoil .
we did a few tours and the guides were very very good . A great place and i would go back in a heartbeat , in fact am looking myself to see if we can get over there around the same time as you myself.
The only thing i would suggest is get the best hotel you can as their 4 star is a bit different to what we normally call a 4 star .

Impetuous fool that I am, I've just booked it.
14 nights all inclusive, inc flights from Gatwick (at a sensible time!) inc hold luggage and airport/hotel transfers, junior suite for £1350.00 each.
5 star hotel but fully aware of varying standards.
Flying out on 7th May, return 22nd. Cushty!!

Been three times and would go again tomorrow given the chance.
Last time we did same as Sponge with the Havana for 4 nights then 10 in Varadero, Havana is a must if you can make the day trip on a plane, what a city.
It's not often you get to see some of Buena Vista Social Club at a gig in a top notch hotel, once in a lifetime stuff.
Did Varadero for 14 nights also 14 nights in Guardalavaca a few years after. We actually preferred Guardalavaca as it was a bit quieter and more rural and the hotel band who played most nights were amazing.
Which hotel are you staying at? We were at the Brisas I think which was great, if they still do them go on the free trips included in the stay, they were superb.
There's also a "swim with dolphins" place nearby which is also worth the trip out if you're into tht type of thing.
The one thing you'll bring back is how warm and genuine the Cuban people are, oh and a suitcase full of dirt cheap Havana Club rum ;)

Proper jealous.

Me and the then soon to be mrs had 2 weeks at Guardalavaca back in 2003. Stayed at Sol Rio de Luna Mares hotel I recall on an all inclusive deal - food and drink as much as you want. Was great, really enjoyed Cuba, explored the east end of the island on a few excursions. Smoked a few cheroots and drank a good bit tof rum, sea swimming and beacb was lovely, pool had a bar in the pool with underwater stools. Lots of quirky little things that make Cuba a bit different, remember a Mig jet converted into a kids slide, the old US cars of course, did a little speed boat excursion, a boat for each couple and no instruction, with a lunatic tour guide beckoning us to follow at high speed as he disappeared up ahead, or little boat was taking air off the swell, then we snaked up a windy river, swear I felt like James Bond. When we rocked up to the place there were submerged boats in the harbour! Health and safety was not top priority! Food was fine, wasn't sensational but good eniugh. Sea life centre close by - did the swin with dolphins thing which was memorable. Country is poorish but people nice. Holguin is interetsing and Santiago too, do a cigar factory tour...... You'll love it.

If cigars are your forte, you are laughing. But don't try bringing any back to make a profit, no one is interested. Unless you give them away. Took a box of 25 Cohibas to daughters wedding.there was one left at the end of the night.
