Hi - Just wondered if anyone could point me in the direction of information regarding how the CSS is calculated for club events. I am assuming there is a formula, but I am not able to find it!

cheers

you need a set of tables from congu. You basically calculate the number of players from each category in the comp and then work out the percentage of players in each category that shoot buffrr or better. Then you look up these values in the table and get your result.

That's about as detailed as you'll find I think

i'd like to know how the css is calulcated, its always a crazy amount at my club

entered two stableford compeitions since joining

31 points css of 75 and i came 3rd
37 points css of 73 and i came 1st.

Both times i thought id be short of the prizes, im starting to think im a bit of a bandit
despite playing short of my handicap once and just beating it the other

The tables are only in the handbook I think but you can buy them for £4 here http://www.englishwomensgolf.org/news.asp?id=1&newsid=1753.

I am taking over as handicap secretary so have the knowledge but if I told you then I'd have to kill you ;)

I have always been intrigued how they are calculated and got better at estimating it after comp results (ladies tend to have a drink and announce them).

It's a formula dreamed up by the clinically insane who are currently in orbit around a completely different planet. It is used to arrive a a fictitious number, believed by the terminally bewildered to be a fair way of adjusting our Handicaps.
Rule 1 - Don't get me started on CSS

Spooky - that's in the addendum to The Congu Manual 2012-2015

I have managed to find the online version --> http://www.englishgolfunion.org/e-brochure/index.html

The online has the tables needed for calculation deliberately omitted - they want you to buy the booklet at £4 a copy.

Below is an example I posted on another thread in early February which shows the principle involved:

"It's not that complicated - I used to do it manually before I discovered Handicapmaster.

You would expect your CSS to be mostly 71 (37 points) or 70 (38 points) with the occasional 72 (36 points) or higher.
CSS is based on the proportion of players in Cats 1, 2and 3 who have equalled or bettered a certain score on the day – 72 (36 points) for Cat 1, 73 (35 points) for Cat 2 and 74 (34 points) for Cat 3.
The approximate proportions and resultant CSS are:
40% and over = CSS 70 (38 points)
20 to 39% = CSS 71 (37 points)
14 to 19% = CSS 72 (36 points)
10 to 13% = CSS 73 (35 points)
6 to 9% = CSS 74 (34 points)
Less than 6% =CSS 74 (34 points) (Reductions Only)

PS - This refers to the OP's course - Par 72, SSS 71."

Perhaps Duckworth Lewis dreamed up the CSS formular. Their cricket result formular is impossible to fathem. Even the pro's do not understand it

The first rule of Competetion Scratch Score is that you DO NOT TALK ABOUT Competetion Scratch Score, The second rule of Competetion Scratch Score....

Couple of points - that might clarify or might confuse (further).

Up until this year it was based on the percentage of players of Cat1-3 (4 for ladies I believe) who were within 2 shots of the SSS. From this year, it's same but ... within SSS + buffer value. That is taken into account by the varying Stableford Point values in Rosecott's post.

It's the percentage/number of players in that range, not how far below they are. So a 49 point score has no greater effect on the CSS than a 39 point score - as CSS movement is limited to 1 better or 3 poorer than SSS.
