Crete hoilday suggestions

Been to a few Greek islands, one of which is Crete - for a variety of things to see and do aside from the beach, Crete is probably the best spot, its a long time since I was there but remember hiring a Suzuki jimny open top and going up to the mountains to old farming plains with old windmills which was a world away from the touristy beach thing. There's also the Minoan historic ruins/cultural stuff to see. Island is a good size so would take some exploring.
I was based at Hersonnisis not far from Heraklion half way along the north shore and it was good enough, typical Greek narrow beach and bars/restaurants.
Agios Nickolaus is supposed to be a good example of an old Cretan town if you prefer the culture of an old trad town. For peace and quiet Ierapetra on south coast is supposed to be good but didn't get down there.
You dont say if you're on a lads holiday, taking the mrs or taking kids as well - that'll determine which resort/area you want. Think Malia is the young Brits on the piss spot (to avoid) but I wouldn't know about that!

I went to Crete about 25 years ago on a family holiday. I remember we stayed in Stalis which was a nice place. We done some day trips, Elounda had a nice beach, Agios Nikolias had a busy harbour we also visited another beach on a day trip but I can't remember the name of it, however what I do remember is it was the set of an old 'Bounty' chocolate bar advert 'a taste of paradise' and it didn't disappoint. All I can remember is it was at the eastern end of the island.
I do love Greece, the food, the people the heat. What I would say is get off the beaten track and explore as much as possible, you won't be dissapointed.

Stayed at the Camari Gardens in Rethymnon,
Family run, nice & quite, away from the busy part of town,
Well worth a look

If you go to Crete do not fail to do the Samaria Gorge walk. A coach takes you up into the mountains and you walk to the sea through the gorge. Take your swim cossie because nothing beats coming off that walk and going straight into the sea.

Must be close to 15 years since I did that but still remember it vividly. Loved it.
