Craigielaw Golf Club?

Re VAT.
If a clubs visitors fees exceeds it's membership fees then they rate it the same as a public course.

Well given how much they used to take in visitors fees, they are always going to struggle to be rated other than 'public'!

I can see the logic in that division, though Gullane and a few others 'high profile' ones are likely to be caught by it! I can see why they would want to increase membership but, the impression I got was that they'd be unlikely to actually get out of the 'public course' category!

@FD. I would recommend that you try to get into Gullane, but I feel Craigielaw would be a great stop-gap until it happens. For some reason, I got the feeling that Dunbar was a bit of a stuffy and a female-unfriendly club - could be completely though - even though I actually liked the course a touch more than C'law. Craigielaw is also 15-20mins closer to Edinburgh.

Know several female players who play out of Dunbar now, OP probably knows them as well through MLGA. Seems to have been a bit of an influx in 'younger' ladies down there in recent times.

My brother was on the committee for many years and the hardest job the had was finding ways of how to spend the money.

I got into North Berwick after only 6 months on the waiting list. Everytime I meet a lady member they ask me if my wife plays so I think they are actively seeking more ladies. Despite being an 'old' club i've found it very welcoming. Might not be long enough for you but it is lotsa fun :)

I've played Dunbar a couple of times recently and I can't praise it enough. The course is in first class condition and the Belhaven Black beer at the 19th hole is simply outstanding. (just thought I'd say!)

I also had a game at Gullane 1 last week and apparently they had a million pound turnover in visitors green fees last season - not bad at all in the present economic climate.

I first tasted it at Kilspindie last season and am delighted to say it is now on tap in my own clubhouse.

A couple of Belhaven beers (Rabbie Burns and a Pale Ale whose name I forget) have been 'guest' ones at the pub across the road (1.5 miles from Wentworth). I can confirm that Belhaven beers travel well - it's not just fond memories!
