Anyone know of any good courses, pay & play, near Chelmsford. I have agreed to take my Mrs to V festival on Saturday and then pick her up afterwards, so I plan to find somewhere to play golf all day instead of driving home and back again.

Channels is very nice but a bit pricey at £40 per round. Our course is a bit further away, maybe another 20-30 mins but a bit cheaper than Channels. There are plenty around though, just call them and see if you can get a deal for a days golf.

I played channels recently, its a lovely place. Choice of 2 courses too. £40 isnt too bad, ask them if they will do you a deal for a better price maybe?

Definitiely worth playing though

Courses to look at in the area:

Highlands Park - junction of A12 and A414 right next to V venue - pay and play and listen to the music all at the same time. Get stuck in traffic jams as well!

North side of Chelmsford: Channels and Regiment Way golf centre.
20 minutes drive towards Colchester: Benton Hall at Witham (my home club) - not sure what the visitors arrangements are at weekends; Forrester Park at Great Totham - both nice courses.
Bit further out: Five Lakes (Lakes Course) at the Crown Plaza Resort Colchester (actually nowhere near Colchester) at Tollesbury and The Essex at Earls Colne.

Hope this helps. Someone may be able to help out with courses on the west side of Chelmsford.

Channels is you best bet for a full days golf as they have 27 holes up there with the main course and then Belsteads as well which is a great little 9 hole course.

Failing that, come up to our gaff as Davey said or go down to Brentwood and play Bentleys. A little bit pricey but well worth the money, it's a great course, loads of good looking holes and very well kept, better than Channels.

I've played a course near Chelmsford a couple of times - but I can't remember what it's called. Can hardly recommend it on that basis - but it had loads of water - the clubhouse had a ground floor decking to the edge of a lake. If someone could remind me of what it's called that would be great. It doesn't look like any I find by Googling Chelmsford golf - so may be slightly further afield (my mate drove us from his home in Chelmsford - maybe took 20mins?)

Well Channels is members only at the weekend, but could take me if I call on the day, I'd rather have somewhere booked though. Bentleys have their club championships this weekend so thats closed. Any of you guys fancy meeting me for a round at Forrester Park. I've emailed them now asking If I can get on anyway.

3 rivers?

3 rivers?

That's what I thought - but it didn't seem to quite fit my memory when I had a look - unless it been changed in the last few years. The lake in front of the clubhouse wasn't actually part of the course (or the one I played). First tee was a fair walk from the clubhouse and you immediately drove over a small river. Some holes (back nine I think towards the end) had trees and oob down LHS and river and reeds and lateral water hazards down the RHS. 3 rivers does seem a bit of a favourite for it though - will have another look. To be honest I didn't think much of the place - though that was maybe ten (?) years ago.

sounds a bit like Canons Brook, but thats a bit further away over by Harlow

Stockbrook Manor, Three Rivers, The Warren, South Essex are all worth a look. Apparently Toothill is very good too, but I've never played it.

That course may have been Five Lakes? I'm pretty sure it's not Three Rivers, as for as long as I can remember the lake has been a part of the 18th hole and unlike the way you described never been just off the decking, of which they don't have any.

Let us know what course you decide to go to though and leave a review of it if you have time.

If i remember rightly five lakes used to be called quietwaters , i worked there when they built it and they overspent by millions , resulting in the banks taking it over and then selling it .

I'm booked in to play Forrester Park at 14:30, £30 for golf until dusk, that should keep me pretty busy!!

Great, let us know how you get on and what you think of the course. Could be tough pin positions what with the club champs the next day. Maybe give us some tips before we play Sunday.

Hope you enjoy it.

I played Forrester Park on Saturday and I'm sorry to say it was the most boring course I've ever played. Most holes where Identical and just dead straight, copies of each other just varying by length. From hole 1 through to 6, they were all the same, dog leg 7th broke the boredom up a little, but once round the corner the hole was the same as 1 -6, pretty much all flat. Holes 8 to 13 were the best part, up amongst the trees where a little thought was needed for each shot. I liked the two par 3's down hill, 11 and 13 I think they were. Then 14 - 17 back out onto the flat ground to repeat the boring holes that looked just the holes from the front nine. Only 18 was a bit different taking you up hill back towards the club house.
The green were pretty nice, very different grass and a very different feel to lots of green ive seen before but I putted quite well so I liked the greens.
Thanks for the the recommendation but I wont be rushing back any time soon.
