Well, I’m in Manchester and I was taking HID out for lunch and I was hoping to stop off at Old Trafford to watch a bit of he first day!
Seems like a washout, but few games on the go!
Who do people fancy this year?!? Lancs have made some great signings in Onions and Chanderpaul but I think the weather will play a big part.

My local lot have done well with signing Hashim Amla, Sam Northeast and Dale Steyn (albeit for a short period)

There's a few plumping for Lancs but much will depend on whether Hameed and Livingstone are picked for England or not.

I feel for anyone playing cricket today. Pity the poor fielder that has to take his hands out of his pockets to stop a rasping drive or square cut. I'd be letting it go past :D #stinger

Hameed ended up playing league cricket at Formby last year and couldn’t get it off the square! I would be worried if he got picked... Livingstone could be picked, but I see him in the one dayers befor the test team....
Amal is a great signing I see him getting a bucket of runs!

The two overseas signings that Hants have made are mouth watering propositions! Going to watch a day of the Essex game next week so hopefully will see Amla bat. Expecting good things from Sam Northeast as well and Lewis McManus although not sure why he was opening the batting today!

Cant think there will be many pitches in decent shape yet! Brrr....

Remember playing at Trowbridge in the opening game of 1989 Season and we came off for snow!

remember the day it snowed at the start of a season, we played on a very firm (read frozen) track that day lol. One of our openers got 170, didnt get another run all season really and became know as the Snowman for many years haha

Time for the mighty Essex to go back to back :)

Might get Cook for most of the season too

Always had a soft spot for Essex. Spent a bank holiday weekend watching them play at Chelmsford way back in 1986, a season they went on to win the County Championship. That was the fore runner to a pretty good few seasons as they developed a strong team.

Cricket has changed, but, the County Championship is still the benchmark IMO.

Not in the eyes of the ECB.

Otherwise the fixtures wouldn't be front and tail-end loaded. Championship is decided on either early season green tops or September worn out tracks.

What do they actually know about cricket though?!

Good question!

Obviously decided that T20 is the future but, as I understand it, rather than work with the existing successful competition they have decided to introduce a further comp for eight franchises.

Surely the two comps will detract from each other and maybe end up killing the golden goose that is T20.

1979 really opened the floodgates for Essex but the mid/late 80's were great times too. I think we'll be very competitive this year too especially if we can keep Harmer and Porter fit. We've gone for bowling on the overseas front and runs may be a problem but if England choose a new direction then Ali Cook will make hay in the Championship. Hampshire's World XI have potential to do good things too.

Sadly it's only too believable and shows what happens when you listen too closely to the marketing whizz kids.

What will be next? Five overs a side?

May bring one or two more in but could, at the same time, alienate many existing supporters; particularly at those counties excluded from the franchise competition.

It certainly won't do anything to improve the standard of the England team.

So the ECB are trying to innovate in the only area that doesnt need any more innovation, all because the games shown on the BBC arent able to run past 9pm.

Once again showing they are clowns of the highest order and not fit to run the sport. This is the same organisation who recently dropped the very successful 40 over format as it was out of line with international cricket yet now want to alter another format away from the international one. Not to mention wanting to actually break the laws of cricket by having a 10 ball over (which is going to bring a fresh tactical dimension ROFL). How long before we hear a commentator talk about specialist 10 ball bowlers WALOFS!

I saw an amusing tweet yesterday along the lines of "Who'd have thought the involvement with Stanford would be the ECBs biggest error wrt to T20"

What happens when it rains (as it seems to in most UK games). Is the 9pm deadline being stuck to? Not sure as a fan I fancy going to a game that is more likely to be ruined/cancelled by the weather because the cut off isnt extendable, but then Id be very surprised if the ECB have paid any thought to what the fans would want!

Come on you South Coast Sloggers :D

This was the nail in the coffin for me. I wasnt that bothered about going before this latest set of tinkering. I am more likely to be watching Hampshire playing their 50 over game at somewhere like Basingstoke.

Mind you, the ECB have made it clear they are targetting a new audience for this comp so they're not really interested in current supporters.

Makes the midweek "Chip Shop Cup" that Clubs often play in look like serious cricket!
