Played there today and I must say I was very impressed with the course. Despite being a bit waterlogged in areas (which course isn't at the mo) the course was in superb nick and major problem areas were well marked out as GUR. Greens were receptive and soft but surprisingly fast and any putt downhill got the knees knocking. A good test without being overly punishing the tree lined fairways meant that you were rewarded for being straight but the well tended rough meant that drives going off line allowed you to take your medicine and get a shot back to the fairway. The 9th was a seemingly straight forward par 3. Things changed on the green though and any shot past the pin meant a tricky downhill putt that, if missed, flew past no matter how softly tapped. The sharp dog leg right of the 12th proved to be a tricky tee shot espeacially for the first time playing it. But the best had to be the Par 4 S.I 1 15th. Water and OOB to the right and trees lining the left meant you needed to keep your drive centre. You then have to decide if you will try and carry the water hazard in front of the green or lay up. Even if you could successfully negotiate the water on your 2nd the large green was well guarded with bunkers. It might be a bit short compared to other courses in the area but it was very enjoyable.
An excellent course for societies thanks to the relatively forgiving nature of the rough, but still proved a challenge for low handicappers. Only negatives are the layout being a bit confusing at times and the bunker being quiet compacted and containing very gritty sand. It was worth checking to ensure you are on the correct tee. A pair of American tourists ahead of us ended up playing the course massively out of order and missed 3 holes!
Cost was 60 euro for each four ball (15 per person). The welcome at the club house for our society by the past captain was warm and friendly. Accompanied by a complimentary coffee and a good menu choice all of which was under 10 euro. The food was also excellent. I will be returning sooner rather than later.
