Hi,

Is there anything in the rules about having a competition within a competition. . . . . . Four guys enter the individual medal comp and playing together they throw up the balls to draw and play a better ball stableford comp between themselves (losers buy the drinks).

There's nothing in the rules to stop this as the "prize" is a round of drinks. If you were each putting up £500 the the R&A might have something to say about it.

Can't imagine why you would want to do this in a Medal round - I'd be concentrating on my own game.

How can you play individual Medal Strokeplay and something else at the same time ?

I'll say yes, the rules don't allow it. Can't think off the top of my head what/where. But it would be a recipe for disaster to play like that.

I have had a quick look in the rules, because I thought there was something, but I couldn't see it just flicking through, so may be you can. I don't see the harm in it, as medal can be scored (and h/caps adjusted) from stableford anyway. Match play is more interesting, but I have done it before, and it does take some of the stress of the medal card away,.

I'm assuming if its just for drinks then it is an unofficial competition for just that 4 ball. I don't think there is a problem although if I was the handicap secretary I wouldn't be too chuffed to have some medal cards with stableford scores on them as well.

To be honest in a medal I'm only interested in my ball. We might have a small wager on lowest nett score but nothing else

If you marked the scores on separate cards it should be fine but putting stapleford scores on your medal card, as Homer said, may bring a frown to the face of your secretary. So provided this didn't then make you play slower and hold up other groups it should be fine.

Unless of course the rules do say otherwise.
