Comp rounds to enter “majors”

As far as I can see, Woodhall Spa opens specify 3 comp scores in the previous 12 months to be eligible for a prize. There is absolutely nothing (real) that such a condition can achieve.
Indeed, I stand corrected. I was convinced this/last year they had 5, but it’s clearly 3 now.

When the governing body puts restrictions in place for their opens you know there is a general undercurrent of a lack of trust of GP scores and HC Manipulation - it doesn’t come across as a surprise that clubs are increasing their restrictions
As I am sure you know, EG policy is nowhere near as blunt an instrument as is proposed here. I would argue such a policy is likely to give rise to higher average handicaps, given that average GP scores at my club are over 1 shot lower than Competition scores. I am pretty sure that is not what they are trying to achieve.

I think it’s generally accepted though as even an Open at Woodhall Spa ( the home of England golf) requires 5.

So it’s then a slippery slope of how many is too many…
They require five comp scores in the last 12 months; not five comp scores in the last 20 rounds. The first is fine, the second would break their own guidelines.

From Jan 1st, we will be 8 qualifying cards required over the previous 12 months for all board and knockout comps. GP cards are not counted, so its comp or medals cards only.
Similar at my place except GP cards submitted at any course other than my own (i.e. away course GP cards) do not count towards my eight.

I find this a little confusing.
Are 'knockouts' the same as 'matchplay'?
What are 'comps' as opposed to 'medals'?

Its probably worded slightly awkwardly. Any comp that goes up onto the board, (whether matchplay or strokeplay) is what I meant to convey :)
Medals are just medals. For 7 day members, the last weekend of every month and for 5 day members, the last Tuesday and Thursday of every month.

How do matchplay results affect handicaps?
Do you not have any stableford comps?

I would see such a proposal going down like a lead balloon where I play.

We have lot of players whose majority of GP cards come from playing in swindles. These are run by members with no involvement from the club.

Do they play in club comps ? Or is there enough club comps for them to play in
We run plenty of comps but a lot of players would prefer to play in a swindle rather than a club comp. One of the problems in recent years being how much the club takes out of the kitty for 'expenses'.

I am one such player but I never go in to any comps these days but having enough GP cards on my record does not stop me from entering major comps if I wish.

Also it adds another layer of work for the office which they probably would not want.

That seems a bit of an issue in regards money come out from the comp entry and we are also looking at the funds generated

If the players aren’t interested in playing the club comps then they won’t need to worry about the restrictions

With ISV’s it highlights the players who haven’t got the pre requisite number

Thinking this through even further.

I know from the handicap review we have lots of players who put in cards every time they play and would fall foul of such a rule.

As an example our current Seniors Club Champion probably plays around 4 times a week and I know puts in a card every time he plays, so in 5 weeks will have put in 20 cards. Even with the number of comps we offer there is no way he could put in 10 of those cards a comp cards.

That’s why we have it as “4 comps scores in a rolling 12 month period”

I'm pretty sure I've made this error as well, I'm guessing it's an error. I've seen 6-8 competition scores as being the key phrase but probably have not noticed that it doesn't mean within your current 20, just within the last 12 months.

I'll have to read more closely when I book next year's opens to confirm but that makes more sense.

If it’s within your last 20 scores then that’s going to cause a lot of issues for many

That was my thinking. I'm hoping it was an inaccurate assumption, my brain only absorbing half of the information. Both you and @LincolnShep have made the same point and it makes sense. Not that golf clubs only make sensible decisions but hopefully, on this occasion.........😄

That's ridiculously high. I didn't even play 10 comps all last year - some weekends it just doesn't work out, I'm playing Saturday, comp is only on Sunday, etc. My club just requires 8 competitions played in the last 12 months which is fine.
