Hi All,

My friend and I are looking to cycle from coast 2 coast (westhaven -sunderland) for a couple of charities later on in the year.

Has anyone completed this, and if so i have a few questions?

Basically i don't know where to start, do i have to inform any organisations? Do you have to buy the route from a company or is it easily recognised online?

Do i inform the charity i will be doing it for beforehand or just give them a cheque at the end?

Any other advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
David

If you want to make it formal, engage with the charities and get official giving pages set-up well in advance - that way you can maximise both the potential donations but also encourage donors by it being official. You don't need to buy anything simply to cycle on public roads.
Plan your route well to avoid busy A roads/motorway to keep safety paramount and most of all, enjoy it.

When we were on the Hebrides last year there was a couple of guys cycling.
They had a simple A4 size poster on the back of thier bikes which simply said 47 Islands 14 days and the name of a Hospice
They were from Wearside and they were amazed how much money they collected along the way. They must have made at least £100 on a short ferry crossing [without approaching anyone.]
Perhaps you need to think along those lines. [eg 100 pubs 2 bikes!!] Good luck anyway.

Hi BigD im guessing you mean Whitehaven -Sunderland??

If it is i done it a couple yrs ago and its a sustrans route, excellent signage.
We bought the route map as it gives you couple of options on certain sections as you can do all road route or there some off road sections...
Heres a link to the c2c page http://www.c2c-guide.co.uk/,if you need any more info about it then just ask away mate

I thought the C2C route was St Bee's to Robin Hoods Bay.... Fairly certain thats what herself did for a charity walk a few years back...

The cycling route is different.

We did it several years back over 3 days and did the soft option and had our luggage moved from B&B to B&B. The company we used were brilliant and after day 1 loaned David a bike as his developed a fault (can't recall what now) and boy was it hard to pedal!

It rained for the whole time apart from when we finally hit the coast plus a constant headwind. I managed to fall off on the 2nd day on a slippery tree root and found that washing cuts in energy drink doesn't work so well!

Despite the weather we loved it though and would do it again.
