Hi all

I'm looking to join my first golf club this year after playing for 5 or 6 years. Unfortunately due to work commitments it's going to be only at weekends or potentially 9 holes after work in the summer. Because of this I don't want it to be too far from home Tooting (south west London) so I'm looking for advice or recommendations?

Coombe Hill would be ideal as it's close to the driving range I use but I don't think I can stomach the £1400p.a price increase in 2 years time when I move up an age group.

I know it cuts down the options but don't want to travel anymore than 40ish minutes, any help gratefully appreciated!

What about Dulwich and Sydenham Hill? I know it's SE London, but from Chelsea it isn't far over Clapham Common and round the South Circular. Probably just as quick to get there than any of the other more SW courses like Richmond Park.

Having recently moved away from Fulham, I went through this plenty of times. I ended up joining Clandon Regis for 3 years and West Byfleet for 2 years before moving to NW London. Both were about 40 min drive for a game, but having friends and family living out in Surrey it made sense.

Your best bet is along the A3 or M4. Don't bother going east or south towards Croydon, traffic will be too much at weekends.

A few I looked at were coombe wood, coombe hill, Wimbledon Park, the Richmond, fullwell, Royal mid Surrey, Malden, surbiton, burhill.

i came to the conclusion that living in London and playing golf involves big compromises, either travel times or cost or both.

Out of the two, Wimbledon Common and Mitcham - any pros/cons to either I need to know about?

I guess the main concern is the fact that I can only really play at weekends, what the format is at both on Saturday/Sunday?

There are comps every weekend at Wimbledon, it's a very friendly club, possibly the most friendly you'll ever visit. You will never not get a game and there are lots of doubles events on too, which you can easily get a partner for. As I understand it mitcham don't have as many comps but run Saturday swindles of which there are two or three. Greens very similar, Wimbledon probably the harder track, it's certainly tighter. You'll not go wrong with either.

Don't bother with Wimbledon common or London Scottish (same course). You can't play Sunday afternoon, walkers on the common have right of way (ive waited 10 mins on a hole to tee off), you have to wear a red top and no bunkers.

Never played mitcham.

You play Sunday morning though, course shuts at 2pm on Sunday as it's the common. Red is nothing to do with the club it's the conservators rules. Don't let those put you off its a fantastic club and a good course, a great test of golf.
