Clubs for a beginner

Hi everyone

Just a quick thank you for all the help i have had so far. Last night i changed my grip and can say it really did help (still not great) but only just starting. I also called my 2 local pro shops to ask about clubs an both said i need to pay (one was £30 other £35) for a consultation. i also popped into an american Golf shop nearby and they were very helpful.
Is there any clubs better know for new players and any to avoid? I have around £150 to spend and dont need a bag

HI David and welcome

IF you have £150 you are going to be pushing it a little bit to get a full set.

Ultimately you will be best off buying 2nd hand of game improvement, cavity backed irons. A set of iron such as Callaway X series range, Ping G5/10, Taylormade Burner, Titleist AP1, Cleveland CG series range.

Putters are a personal choice thing, but try and get one that suits your eye second hand.

As for woods you maybe able to do without initially until you have a few more £££. If not then something like Taylormade R5/R7, Callaway FT3/5 Titleist 905 should be relatively cheap.

Always worth keeping an eye on the for sale section on here, often some very good bargains in there, otherwise you are going to be looking to golfbidder or ebay predominantly, unless any of the pro shops local to you still stock some second hand clubs

I live in Southampton. To be fair I think they were trying to sell me a lesson and maybe that's the way they see what i need? I just wanted some info but didnt seem very helpful, might of thought i was wasting their time

I have always been a little worried about buying second hand, is there much that could be wrong with a second hand set? Its hard to tell from pics on Ebay etc and im not sure what im looking for really

In order biggest risk is shaft damage, head damage and then worn out grips, try and buy from sellers with 100% feedback (and who have sold golf clubs previously)

Heads, ideally they will show pics of the face, look for lots of stone chips/rust as a sign of ones to avoid

Shaft, dints or dents and rust the big 2 worries

there is a slight risk of fakes but far less likely on a set of 2nd hand irons than on more recent more expensive clubs
