I was at the range the other day, using my Ping G15 driver with stiff Grafalloy Prolaunch red shaft hitting balls to the top of the fence (sorry, not over as it was as string headwind - well maybe one or two over).

By chance I also had with me Mrs Golfy's Cobra driver, with a grip way too small and a women's flex. After one hit and realignment to allow for the soft flex, guess where the balls were landing (hitting)? Just short of my G15. Ditto a friend's 20-year-old God-knows-what driver with shaft so soft it felt like Indiana Jones's whip - same place.

Same with irons. Comparing my precisely fitted +0.5 inch, 3deg upright, Dynamic Gold S300 Ping S56s with orange (thicker) grip, I hit Nike SQs, regular flex, standard grip, standard lie, standard length. Guess where? Same, if not a little further than my fitted clubs.

So the question: Are fitted clubs over-rated, or have I missed something?

Either...

The progress made in golf club design in recent years and the entire world of custom-fitting are myths. Once again, your extraordinary range exploits have turned the world on its head. People will be rushing to flog their Pings and Titleists and instead nabbing ladies clubs and hickory shafted spoons and brassies to knock feather-stuffed "balls" 350yds+.

Or...

Your limitless ability and talent allows you to be HUGE all the time and with any equipment, no matter how inappropriate.

Or...

Yer talking pish again.

I can hit pretty much all clubs, I can hit my driver practically as far when I grip it right down on the shaft and most irons whatever the type/shaft but custom fitting is the one that you generally hit best, most consistent and the easiest (no adjustments to swing, grip or alignment). No rocket science involved, the variables on custom fit can be very small (ie: 2° ball launch, 4yds dispersion or a few yards on distance).

In my opinion custom fit is only to determin the right club for the better player OR a basic measurement for the beginner to determine just how good/bad the clubs are they are using for their swing, eg: no good if you have cubs that are 4° upright that your mate gave you if you are only 5' 3" :p

FOR SALE

Complete set of custom fit Titleist irons and a D2 910 custom fit driver - £870 (original cost)

Reason for sale:

want to invest the money in £50 set of ladies clubs that will go just as well and spend the rest on medication to help get over the cr*p that i just read earlier on this thread!

I like this question ? it is one i have often pondered but still dont know the answer to . never had a lesson & never been fitted for clubs & i consider myself to be a decent golfer , i was often wondering if i just need to put more time in rather than get fitted.. i know people who have had lessons & been fitted for the best of gear , didnt make them great golfers tho ..when buying new clubs is fitting built into the price or is it an extra charge ? irrelevant question at the min coz i couldnt vindicate purchasing new clubs when theres nothing wrong the ones i have

I believe that a truly good golfer can hit any club. His first shot may not go where s/he wants it to go but s/he'll know what to do to get the next one to go straight.

If you can honestly do that then you're a very good player and once you get on a course your handicap will be very low.

You need to get on a course and tap into that natural talent.

The shaft won't make a huge difference to clubhead speed, but as you found out the right shaft will be the one that best gets the clubface back to square at impact for your swing.

Seems a fair enough question to me. You've hit clubs that shouldn't be suited to you almost as well as your own, and wondered why.

Custom fitting isn't the be all and end all of finding clubs you can play well with imo. JustOne must have one of the fastest swing speeds on here and plays regular light shafted irons :o

I'm glad to see you keeping your sense of humour in the face of continued unnecessary abuse

The shaft won't make a huge difference to clubhead speed,

Disagree with that one I'm afraid. A lighter shaft will possibly allow greater clubhead speed compared to a heavier shaft, won't it ?

That's why a full fitting with various options of shafts does make a difference ;)

Sorry, I meant the flex of the shaft.
The wrong flex to the right flex made 3mph difference to my 6 iron speed, but I didn't try different weights.

Perhaps not quite a "myth" but i dont think its a panacea to cure all ills.

I think it helps you make an informed choice and possibly avoid you thinking "what if".

Did u get fitted for your irons?
