It doesn't matter how far you hit each club, the important thing is to choose the right club for the distance you want to go. One day it might be a 9, same distance on a different day it might be a 6.

It matters that you know how far you hit each of your clubs.

Oh cool, it's time for this again. :D

D: 240-250
5W: 220 ish
3H: 190-200
5i: 170-180
6i: 160-170
7i: 150-160
8i: 140-150
9i: 130-135
PW: 110-125
50°: 90-100
56°: 75 ish

All variable depending on conditions of course.

This lot looks like me

On the range last night I reckon I was hitting about 135 average with my 7i. Not that far (though against a bit of a breeze ). But you know what - 95% of about 80 balls hit were pretty straight - with only 4 rocketing off at right angles, and given my last weekend's debacle I was delirious.

I’ve said it before but it never ceases to amaze how accurate folks are in not only in shooting average distances that occur in round numbers i.e my x club goes 140-150 (what, not 132-142 then 142-152!) but also how they consistently manage only 10 yard gaps (or the occasional 5 yrd) right through the bag instead of 9 or 12!

Amazeballs fellas, you guys are machines :p

On a question like this you have to go for an average of what you hit. You are quite right but that doesn't help the OP with his question. If we preface our answers with, "if I hit 10 balls 6-7 will be somewhere in this range with this club"

I hit my pw 100yds, bang on. My 9 iron is 110-115, 8 iron 120-130, 7 iron 135-145. The gaps are not exact, I am not consistent enough with my striking and that gets even more noticeable as the clubs get longer. You need a guide though. On an ideal day, if I hit it correctly, what distance will the ball go with club x. Answering the question with 7 iron 100-145yds is not ideal even though it is entirely within the realms of possibility. I think it is also human nature to round up to a nice number and one ending 0 or 5 works well for most people. saying I hit a 7 iron 139 yds just doesn't sit right.

Not sure i follow. Don't think anyone has stated that they hit every club the same distance every time they make a swing. The yardages provided (by me at least) are indications of the distances of each and the gaps between them. And as you get to your wedges, your gapping should start to get more precise.

For some of us it only matters that we know our distances pretty roughly - which is just as well for me as there is little that is very consistent in the way and how I choose to hit a golf ball with any club - and hence the distance I will consistently get varies.

I suppose I should know that in calm conditions I will rarely be able to hit my 7i 160yds, and will rarely hit it less than 135yds. What happens in between depends how I feel about playing the shot for which I have chosen to hit a 7i.

Don’t get me wrong, out on the course I do it to, I’ve got 127 to go so its x club because I hit that 130. Most of us round the real number up or down to the nearest increment of ‘0’ (or 5)

I’m just saying (for devilment really) how fortunate or skilled folks are that their average is a nice round number like 130 instead of an average of 133 :D

or they hit x club between 130-140 instead of between 133-145
and that gaps seem to stay mostly consistent at 10 yards through a set of irons despite the high skill needed to do that

As I say, bit of mischief really ;)

The biggest mistake most of us make, myself included is thinking we'll middle it all the time and very often come up short, how often are you long of the pin with approach shots ? I'd guess not very...

My basic GPS gives me distance to the front, middle and back of the green. I then select a club that I would expect to reach the middle of the green with, but even with a Sunday best, would not go long. It usually amounts to an extra club over the one that gets me to the middle of the green. I would struggle to commit to a shot knowing that nailing it would send it sailing over the back.

The exception of course being where there is big trouble at the back and no trouble at the front.

No, but surely you want to know how far the ball goes with each club when you do hit it out of where you are supposed to - the middle?

Absolute travesty if you are playing golf expecting to hit the ball a distance based on a **** strike. What if you hit it well??

The yardages for my club distances aren't based on 2 or 3 swings. They have been set over a long period of time and are continuously monitored by me when i'm practising.

According to the pro at a gapping session I had:-

Driver carry 240 average 260

Fairway carry 225 average 240

3 hybrid carry 208 average 220

4 iron carry 182 average 195
5 iron carry 172 average 185
6 iron carry 163 average 176
7 iron carry 154 average 167
8 iron carry 143 average 157
9 iron carry 132 average 146

PW carry 106 average 114
GW carry 93 average 99
SW carry 74 average 82

That was over 5 balls hit, best and worst removed, carry was then the longest of the remaining three, average was the average of the total distance including roll out of the remaining three.

D: 240-250
5W: 220 ish
3H: 190-200
5i: 170-180
6i: 160-170
7i: 150-160
8i: 140-150
9i: 130-135
PW: 110-125
50°: 90-100
56°: 75 ish

Pretty similar to me tbh, except my wedges are different degrees, and I never hit them full out. I need to look at a proper gap test tbh, as I reckon I have some gaps at the top end and the bottom end. I definitely need another wedge!

I’m pretty long with short irons but normalise as clubs get longer and require less hit.
A hard PW can be pushed to just over 140.
8 iron 160,
6 iron is 185
4 iron 200ish
Hybrid 225
5wood 240
Driver 255
(These are carry distances)
Driver swing speed is about 110, 6 iron swing speed is about 93.

.

Of course we base our club selection on hitting it well, point is, out of ten, chances are approx 50% aren't hit well for the average golfer.

These are the clubs I would select for shot at each yardage:

PW - 135
9i - 145
8i - 155
7i - 165
6i - 175
5i - 185
4i - 185 (getting a bit ropey with strike and ball flight now)
2h - 200
3w - 210-220
D - 220-240

Approximate averages for my yardages when i'm selecting a club;

D - 280
3W - 250
5W - 225
4i - 190/200
5i - 180
6i - 170
7i - 160
8i - 150
9i - 135
PW - 125
52W - 105
56W - 85
60W - 60

Interesting looking at these two together; quite similar through the irons, but a big difference on the driver.

thesheriff - do you struggle to get the best out of your driver?

You do need a starting point however. So you can start with a club that goes x yards, and then vary it based on wind, slopes, warmth, pin position etc etc

Indeed, par 3 10th at my place is a 160yds give of take from the whites, it was playing 166yds the other day, downhill slope drop about 10-15feet ish, wind a slight breeze was behind, would be an 8 iron, one club less than otherwise. However with the wind into your face I'd go one club up and play a 6 iron, if the hole was flat I'd play the yardage and go with a 7 iron.
