Club Championships - what's the score nowadays?

I know of a club in Glasgow which plays a competition called the "SNORTER".

Its meant to be a fun competition which now has a bigger following than the Club Championship on finals day.

Its a club matchplay event however the twist is that you have to win your match to get knocked out! Basically you lose to go through to the next round and the person that ultimately loses in the final is the worst matchplay player in the club.

As I say it started as a bit of fun and has grown hugely as the stigma attached to it is quite obvious.

John
We're 4 rounds of strokeplay played Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. It's quite an intense week if you're contending and I don't think it's belittled by not being match play. I've played in the last 3 Saturday group twice now and having 20 or 30 people walk the last 9 with you is a little intimidating.

Pros and cons of each format but strokeplay finds Mr consistently good whereas Matchplay can find an inconsistent champion who played well on one day rather than 4.

Birdieman I disagree as the matchplay knockout stage is usually played over a week with the final on Sunday so it still rewards the consistant golfer who has played the best over the week.

I can see merrits for both Strokeplay and Matchplay CC's however I have only ever experienced matchplay.

Craw believe me you can win playing poorly,I won mine playing very average 1st round, poorly 2nd and semi and like a pro in the final....you can't do that in our 54 hole strokeplay well not unless the rest play crap!

Our club championship is open to all adult male members to enter. It is 36 holes of strokeplay over two days with a cut for the 2nd round where the field goes out in reverse order on day two (best scores out last).

The club champion is the golfer with the lowest GROSS score over two rounds. There is also a handicap prize for the lowest nett score but that person is not deemed the club champion.

I think this format works well as it gives everyone a chance. Also switching from 36 holes in a day opens it up to a lot of our senior golfers for whom 36 in one day is really too much. Also, it stops a lot of those with bad first rounds from just leaving at lunchtime after the first round.

You can win by scrambling and getting it round, you cant win playing poorly. There is a difference.

Of course you can Craw. You don't have to play well, just score better than your opponent.

At most clubs there are may be 20 (max) who can realistically win the championship. In strokeplay the winner has to beat the other 19 all at the same time.

If it gets to matchplay, first off he only will potentially face half the field. All the best players may end up on one half of the draw so giving a "lesser" player an easier path through.

There are real pros and cons for both, interesting to see that a club plays four rounds across a week. Do you have trouble getting numbers to commit for the mid week rounds??

At my club most competitions count towards 'golfer of the year' - presumably the same thing as club champ, it works on the same idea as fedex/race to dubai wherein the winner gets so many points right down to fifth(i think) place. This method probably shows the most consistent golfer but I do like the idea of a 36 hole strokeplay competition. I think competitions like this and 3 club comps would be a good idea once in a while to add a bit of variety to the sat comps.

No, it isn't the same. We have a points system during the year, for which you win a shiny nylon blazer, and get your name on a board, but the club championship is a different event altogether.

Love watching Cat1's moan about the unfairness of golf, no matter where they are they moan.

Bit of a generalisation there Parmo -

I don't see anyone on this thread moaning about unfairness, only a little moan about playing poorly, :D they're quite different. I think any category golfer would have a wee moan about playing poorly wouldn't they, not just cat. 1's?

Moaning, club slamming and swearing is not the preserve of the low handicapper in my experience. Mind you on Saturday I was playing with a 1 handicapper who shot an 84 - atmos was quite tense at times!!! :o

We could argue about this all week and get nowhere. IMO I think the best golfer is someone who can shoot 2 scores over 1 day. Someone said that it's unfair for the older golfer to play 36 holes in other words the older guy has no chance. Shame that really.
We used to seed the 1st round draw, until a new breed came in and thought it was better having an open draw. I was drawn with an 8 handicapper yesterday who shot an 88, only because he chipped in at the 18th for it. If it hadn't of hit the stick he wasn't breaking 90. I had to watch this while I tryed to play golf. Tough titty if the higher guys think it's unfair to seed the draw. In our club there are only about 6 guys who really could do it over 36 holes on the same day. The guy I played with yesterday shot 88 and 87, now why the hell did he enter? His handicap is 8? I also had to indure an 18year old playing off 5 yeah FIVE shooting 85 in the 2nd round and throwing all the trauntrums he could. 5 my arse. He has as much chance of climbing to the moon as shooting 2 low scores in 1 day.
As for cat 1 golfers crying about losing out to a higher handicapper, why does a man with 2 arms 2 legs and good eyes need a handicap of anything higher than 18. I was pipped a few weeks ago for a 2 day comp by a guy playing off 24, the guy was all pleased with himself for shooting a 89 and a 91 = 180 for 2 rounds (was he playing darts?) I shot 71 and 72 = 143. 37 shots less than him and he won. What other sport in the world does this happen in?
Answers on a post card to my mate on the moon he should be there by now.

We only swapped as I said as the club felt it was the main event of the year and wanted it open to as many members as possible hence the switch to two rounds to let a lot of the senior guys in. They like me have no chance to win the actual championship itself but at least they are in for the handicap prize and both events count towards order of merit points (although you don't get points for scratch and handicap placings).

I think the field this year was around 85 or so and up by nearly 30 on last year. I know a lot of our membership don't actually like medal rounds (we normally only average around 50 in all divisions for monthly medals) which I think has a lot to do with the need to hit a decent drive on our 3rd to clear the protected environmental area (some of the older guys plus a few higher handicappers just can't do it). I don't think its right that they see stableford as the only event they can play in and have tried lobbying as best I can to get as many of the club involved. Any ideas welcomed so I can go back to the captain/committee for next year

Our club champs is a joke , the club just arent interested in better golfers.

It was over 2 days with no draw or seeding , just play with your mates off any handicap. Green fee payers and friendly matches are allowed to play if theyve booked the tee etc etc AN ABSOLUTE JOKE , old duffers riding about in thier buggies in the middle of the club champs..I ask you !!

Weston Park GC you are a joke

Oh btw I got beaten into 2nd place on countback for the gross and nett :D :D

My last place did the 36 in one day in strict h/c order with the best golfers out last. Great to have everyone who finished early coming out to cheer on the last few groups , spices up the pressure

Out of interest, our championship (best gross) was won by a 3 handicapper who shot 69 (-1 gross) and 72 (+2) whilst the handicap prize was won by a 19 handicapper (now off 17) with nett 64 (-6) and 67 (-3) which I think indicates that a championship open to all members, with a cut, allows good golf to shine through and the best players to come to the top

Ours is 36 hole qualifying 18 one week then 18 the next then the top 16 CAT 1 players play knock out during the week then 36 hole matchplay on the sunday ,its the same for the handicap section .We have a finals day on the sunday with the men, women, seniors and juniors championships all on that day its a good day out to watch whats going on my mate to the final 3 years ago what a great day we had even tho he got beat it was still enjoyable.

Great format for 'jobseekers'......

If the field is only 85...then you wouldn't have to lose that many to get the 36 done on one day....7 maybe....

Don't you have a drop zone on the 3rd?....Hit, drop, play 3 over, 4 onto the green, chance for a 5? If they can't get over in 3 then they shouldn't really be playing....they must love the 1st!!!!

To be honest, at my last club the Championship was pretty much a joke. With so few members and only 4 or 5 single figures there were maybe 2 or 3 in with a realistic chance of winning it. I came 3rd 2 years running - about 6 shots behind. Gave up after that - didn't see the point. I was never going to win the main prize, the handicap prize was always won with a silly score and it was almost always the weekend of our holiday (thanks to HID's work).
