Cleaning a Lawnmower

Hi,

This year I've been using a petrol lawnmower for the first time after years of using electric and I have one question. With my electric mower I used to clean in and around the cutting blade to get rid of the the suck on dried grass, with the petrol one I've never done this. Does it need to be done as turning it upside down (I'm guessing) is not advisable with all the petrol and oil in the the thing.

So should I build some sort of inspection bay or not worry about it?

I can't believe the timing of this post....

I've just taken mine in for a service. I turn mine on it's side all the time to clear out the grass and sharpen the blades. Never been a problem. However, my expertise is not exactly great......

might well depend on the fuel tank and fuel lines....I had a 1970s Suffolk that certainly didn't like being turned anything other than upright.

I think you'll need to buy yourself a mini car ramp.

I have a lawnmower service center 2 doors down from me here at work. He just tips them on their side and preasure washes them.

Just used mine this morning. I use a large headed artist's brush to remove loose grass and turn the blades by hand to clean behind ( remember to turn the engine off! )I can then also scrape off the crud on the blades.

LOL joking aside I was thinking of doing something like that ... It was my neighbour who said don't turn it over and I guess it made sense but impractical... just cut the grass this afternoon, too wet but left it for a week or so too long and was thinking all this wet grass will just stick to it. Plus side of course is my electric mower wouldn't have cut it so well.

I never have a problem with my petrol mower, after cutting I leave the mower on the grass for an hour or so to cool down, then use a flat bladed scraper to remove the cuttings, soft brush over the top to clear loose grass then put away until the next time

Had my petrol mower 10 years,always turn it on its side after every cut to clean it,last cut of the year I always run the mower dry ,turn it on its side give it a good clean, wd around the blades,job done.

Never heard of anyone putting a mower in for a service before,and I personally wouldnt use a pressure washer to clean around the blades.

I think the instructions will tell you what way it can be turned. Given the state of my grass, I'm not too fussed about sharp blades etc but will put it in for a service every five years.

Instructions? What are those.....last mower I bought was straight off the shop floor, I paid my money and rolled it out the shop and into the boot of the car.

Maybe I should have bought one in a box or something.......

everything has instructions mate. Type the name of the product and instructions into google and bingo a go go

I can tip mine forwards or backwards, but not sideways, according to the warning sign on the side of it.
