Christmas Bonus

My company has 8 employees... was speaking to one of them yesterday (warehouse manager) and he told me that one of the warehouse guys has said he won't be happy if he doesn't get a Christmas bonus this year.

Not that I'm against giving Christmas bonuses... but I don't think anyone should automatically *expect* them - should they? To be fair, the guy in question has done well this year and worked really hard - but is a Christmas bonus supposed to be paid based on performance? Or is it more just a 'gift' from the company?

If it's not performance related, then surely all staff members should receive the same, right? Perhaps with some modifier in there for how long they've been at the company?

This is interesting reading for me.

As a board, we just agreed to pay all our staff a Christmas bonus of £250. Historically it has been much more than that but this year, things are just too tight to give any more than this.

We have done it to show them that things are on the up and to say thanks for their efforts in a tricky year.

Back on topic - We get an annual bonus, on discretion of the MD, every April. this year it paid for new fitted clubs and an engagement ring. The year before..i pi$$ed it up the wall...oh how times have changed
 
Only ever worked for one employer that was prepared to admit the business was in profit....

All the others ran their businesses for the pleasure of employing "overpaid money grabbers"....

The former did provide extra funds for X'mas the latter would offer a choice of a dead bird or three bottles of 'vinegar' as a "seasonal gesture"...
 
Normally yes, but I've only been with the company 5 months. You need to have been with the company 6 months before qualifying for the crimbo bonus. One weeks wage extra is the bonus.

I know alot of people will not get one, but how I see it is I work very hard for the company. I can't remember the last time I worked a standard 40hour week. I've had 4 days off in the last 4 weeks while doing long shifts to ensure jobs get finished on time. I feel I've earned that thank you from the company (Next year now :()
 
Another self employed here, so no bonus as such.

When I was employed any annual bonuses were normally paid in salary cheque nearest end of December
 
When I was HGK at a Surrey club the greenkeepers told me that they got a good Christmas Bonus.
I though that would be handy expecting about £20.
When it came it was nearly £350. That was more than 10X my weekly wage in 1975.
That was a good Christmas for us and two wee bairns.

Thanks for your input so far. Where I work now does a bonus, although it has an upper limit and is performance related at the discretion of the board of directors.

Was being curious around when people got theirs and the Dec pay packet really as both bonus and wages this year will be 23 Dec.

Do we think that is to late ie: should it be Fri 20 to make the most of it over the weekend?
 
I'm responsible for paying 4 wages. When we finish for xmas, the last day would be to grease the digger, clean out the tracks, take them for a full English, and go home paid for he day. I will probably put £50 on the last wage.
 
At my last place we got £100 in the last pay packet before Christmas and a £100 attendence bonus if you had not been off sick all year - that was a good incentive!

In 4 years at my current place I have had one so far and it was £2k in December of last year - which was unexpected and awesome!

Not holding my breath for one this year though, would be nice but really don't expect one and as the name says - it's a bonus!
 
My mum gets hers in Dec , it was £135 for the electric and £ 300 for gas , help with fuel bills , lovely and very nice too lol
