Hi,

Looking to play somewhere in the Chester area around Aug time.
There will be 3 of us of various h/c.
Basically I am crap they play well.

Looking to stay overnight so the other half's can have a spa whilst I am golfing.

Any one recommend a decent place please.

Cheers

Ask TonyN. He's not on here much these days, but if you PM'd I know he'd answer at some point.

ColinT's at Heswall, its only a few miles up the road on the Wirral.
Some good tracks around there. Not played any but I've driven past a few. Bromborough is supposed to be good.

How close to you want to be to Chester ? If you want the spa / hotel in the same place as the course then I'd agree with Junior and go with Carden, it's about 20 minutes south of Chester.

On the Wirral side I'd recommend this as a hotel and / or spa

Again this is about a 20 minute drive to Chester, but in a nice little village. It would be a 10 minute to drive to most of the Wirral courses

As for courses, I haven't played any of the ones actually in Chester but there are some lovely courses in Wirral. If you want parkland then go for Bromborough, for links I'd probably recommend Caldy. It's not as high profile as Wallasey or Hoylake, but they can be really tough challenges. Caldy is a gem of a course and in a lovely spot.

If you want any more info let me know

Carden Park isn't too shabby at all. If I had to choose between the two courses I would choose the Cheshire. It is a bit shorter but I think more challenging.

On the Nicklaus you could get that kind of course anywhere, bit gimmicky… Lots of Water, not much substance.

I would do Portal, played the Championship Course a few times which has some great holes & has always been in perfect condition, I've found Carden Parks conditioning a bit hit & miss. I think Your Golf Travel has a night in the hotel with 2 rounds of golf for less than £100.

Played a few courses in Chester itself & found them a bit stuck up, some good pubs there though (wouldn't recommend the lager in the Old Boot though), Portal's about 15-20 min outside the town.

Carden park is spot in for a overnight stay. 2 decent courses but as somebody has already said I much prefer the Cheshire course than the Nicklaus.

I would defo recommend upton by chester gc if you dont fancy the resort type of places like carden and portal etc.

Also curzon park is also a nice track though some members are a bit up themselves but i wouldn't let that put you off playing there.

There is also a few more decent tracks at sensible prices within a 30min drive hawarden, northop hall, pennant park all good tracks imo.
