8.2 Indicating Line Of Play

Except on the putting green, a player may have the line of play indicated to him by anyone, but no one may be positioned by the player on or close to the line or an extension of the line beyond the hole while the stroke is being made. Any mark placed by the player or with his knowledge to indicate the line must be removed before the stroke is made.

I often have problems with my alignment. I presume it is okay to place a club down AFTER playing your shot on the fairway or the green? I have been doing this recently but cannot find anything in the rules.

Kind Regards,

Rulefan is right. The line of putt extends from the ball to the hole. Once you putt the ball there is a new line of play beginning where the ball ends up. The old one is gone.

If your off the green You can put a club down before u take your shot. Just make sure you pick it up before making your shot.

A further problem arises when a player takes a wedge and a putter to a ball on the fringe. Decides to use the putter and lays wedge down. He then doesn't pick it up after making his shot. :(

sounds like you are talking from experience.

A couple of days ago I was in a bunker on the far side from my bag and took my putter and wedge over.

Lay putter down by the bunker and chipped in for a sleeve of balls from the 2s club :D . Of course I left my putter behind.
I putted the next 4 holes with a 3 hybrid. Never putted so well in by life. It all went pear shaped when the next group passed by in the opposite direction and I got my putter back :(
