Ah that is one of the rules designed specially for Cat 1 players - they are even allowed to put the ball on the tee, especially when it has been a plugged ball in the rough.

Yeah the 'no marker' for LCP is often seen as is moving the ball with clubhead but even more frequent....
When lift, clean, place is in effect when was the last time you saw a second mark placed or a physical scorecard used to indicate the maximum zone a ball can be placed into?

none of our comps are played under conditions where you would take LCP. There is one open up here that is which is at Golspie at the end of March and everyone ive ever played with in that has marked, cleaned and placed withing a score card.

No not bounce games. LCP doesn't start/end based on dates on a calendar here, it comes in based on course conditions on a given day/comp. So it can be put in anytime of the year. I just often see a mark go down and ball clean/placed without a scorecard being used to measure the placement (granted its typically well within a scorecard)

Mark out the area for LCP ?! What ? Yes Mark your ball but putting another marker down for the area of 6 inches or scorecard ? Ridiculous

Different scenario as you are taking a drop within a specified area and then allowed specified length of roll so the area is required to be measured out
You don't not need to measure out when LCP - the game is slow enough as it is

Don't get me wrong I'm not religiously out there with the scorecard either but to say LCP permitted within 6" or within a closed/open scorecard or within one club length, not nearer the hole, is not a specified length or area is ridiculous
If it doesn't require any measure why is a distance stipulated in the LR?

I'd say if it's obviously within the permissible area then no need to measure, if you're looking to get maximum relief on the edge of the permissible area then you need to measure

Yeah that would be stupid. the important part is that I can get the mud off the ball. it usually get placed back withing and few inches anyway.

I stopped using a club to measure to measure drops ages ago and have been questioned a couple of times during competitions about the legality of my drops. No one has ever had a problem when I've explained that there is no need to measure it out.

I played in a mid HC final couple years back and we had a ref - it was LCP and not once was I requested by the ref to mark out area to place

Probably because you placed well enough within the specified area to satisfy the ref that you were playing within the rules
The rules don't instruct you to measure it out (place or drop) they instruct you on the maximum distance & restrictions that your place/drop can be
Whats weird is that you would measure 1 club length for a drop but wouldn't measure 1 club length for a place!

Well when it's LCP i have never seen it 1 club but I normally place the ball right next to my marker
When taking a drop two markers allow me to judge If the ball has bounced in front of the line to ensure I'm not gaining an advantage because no one can predict how a ball will react when dropped

I've played 1club LCP a few times this year already (due to care for the course)
My original point was, place or drop its up to the player to make sure they are within the stated distance. I don't see folk measuring for a LCP and are clearly judging it by eye alone (maybe well practiced at measuring 6") it follows that some of these will be placed outside the stated distance simply because no measure is being done
Placing it 6¼ inches from your marker because a player didn't measure is cheating

I've seen people make minor errors such as grounding their club or not announcing a provisional ball but I've not witnessed anything. Although there is one member who can 'always find his ball no matter how right or left it goes.
