Cheats in your club.......

One outed years ago at my old club. He'd regularly play with two old guys, rather slow on their pins and short hitters. He'd often blast it off line but by the time the old boys had played their second and got up to where the guy was in the trees, he'd always seemed to have found it and always had a perfect lie and room to swing. Rumours abounded and in the end the captain followed from a distance and watched him simply drop another ball safe in the knowledge the old boys would never be any the wiser. Never seen at the club once it became common knowledge

In the last couple of years 2 players have been challenged and left the club. One low handicapper is often mentioned but not caught so far, and one high handicapper was mention to me just the other day

I have been playing for just over two years. In my first year, I saw a golfer drop a ball when searching for the one he had hit. I told him to pick it up, which he did; the third player of our three ball said nothing. It is not unusual to see golfers picking up their ball in the rough 'to identify it' and then replace it nearby, often in one smooth action. There is also the question of 'managed' handicaps.

I don't believe that my club has more than its fair share of people who ignore the inconvenient rules. I do believe that they make a point of playing with other golfers that won't make a fuss about it.

As a newcomer some years back I realised in one game that my opponent was remarkably adept at finding his lost balls once he'd asked me to play on whilst he had "one last look".

I've played air shots/duffed shots, usually amongst the trees, that others haven't noticed but always declared them as I'd be mortified if challenged.
Yet, strangely, my immediate instinct is to check if the bu**ers saw me :D

LOL this is me too.

Think the look around is just out of sheer embarrassment!

Prob is, you then think the look around looks suspicious.

On the cheating front, I play fairly, within the rules and expect that people have the courtesy to do the same.

What annoys me just as much as cheating though is the types that go round ase6eming everyone is out to bend he rules. Have played with a few t*ssers like that over the years and wanted to kill them after a few holes.

And those that constantly go on about people playing better than their handicap suggests. Am sick of hearing "THEY play very well for their handicaps". Cant people have a good day? It's not for you to judge and I don't want to hear it. Join the handicap committee or STFU.

Strop over!

Fella I partnered in foursomes match last weekend tells of playing with a chap who - when on the green marked his ball and put it in his pocket. Then brought it out again to putt. Until my partner spotted that the chap was taking a different ball out of his pocket for his putts

My partner accepted that he was doing it in all innocence - as the guy stated when challenged - 'well this is my putting ball...' But hey...neat cheat?

From my experiences this is only allowed if you are a Cat 1 player...if your handicap is any higher and you play well you are instantly branded a bandit

That can happen to cat 1 as well :D

Not blatant cheating but one guy at our place is fairly loose with his implementation of the rules. He tries to argue that we're not pros on the tour and the game is hard enough as it is without some of the rules getting in the way, such as not being able to clean your ball when caked in mud in the rough or rolling the ball with his club when preferred lies are in play, or dropping at the nicest place of relief rather than nearest etc.

I suspect his type of behaviour is prevalent at most clubs whether known or unknown they are breaking rules.

Plenty of rumours and assertions around my place. Trouble is no comps are drawn so people always go out in the same groups so nobody is going to pull them up.

I am told that this is at least partially the reason why we went to drawn medals.

None that I know of currently but was a hot topic a couple of years back - dealt with well by the club.

Not sure this is really 'cheat' per se but worthy of mention here.

Played in a society game late last year. I had finished (didn't play so good) and was watching the final groups come in. A mate coming in hit his second shot, went forward to look. Looked for a few minutes. Others in group joined him. A minute or two later (didn't time so this isn't a 'five minute' issue) he went back, dropped a ball where he played his second, hit that and walked forward to it. While walking a shout of 'found it' went up for his original ball. He asked someone to walk over and pick up his second ball, walked over and played the original onto the green. Two putts and par. Seeing it all play out I walked over and made sure he realised he 'blobbed' the hole because the second ball was in play and was picked up. "Oh, no. I went back top play a provisional".

I knew I was right but as he was nowhere near contending I let it go after a bit of discussion. Next day I pointed out the actual ruling to him so he did not fall afoul of this in a 'real' comp when it mattered and get a DQ for writing the wrong score. Got a rant back saying I take all the fun out of the game and will do anything to try and beat him. lol.

He left the society and good riddance if you ask me. rather than learn from the situation he chose to berate me for knowing the rules better than him. Makes me wonder what other rules he doesn't like playing.

Not been playing for long myself, and did exactly the same thing on Monday. The correct rules have now been pointed out to me, and needless to say, it won't happen again. There are so many bloody rules in golf, I think it may take me years to learn them all

I've said on here quite often, that knowing the rules quite well is considered by many players as worse than cheating! I was asked recently how to deal with a situation and gave my opinion and, to be fair, I got it very slightly wrong but not enough to make any difference and our opponents took great delight in telling me so after they got in and checked - given that they hadn't got a scooby doo as to the rule I thought that was taking the wotsit!

It is very easy to fall foul of the rules, even as an experienced player. I was 'pulled up' last weekend when I was about to take a free drop in the wrong place. When it was pointed out to me it was crystal clear that my PP was correct. Fortunately it was done in time and I didn't incur a penalty as it was in a comp.

For sure, you get this an awful lot. One of the guys in our swindle is like this, but as he never wins, and you don't even get your entry back, no one cares. I don't think he does it in comps though, just in Saturday morning roll ups.

We Had a situation a couple of years ago when some new members joined who all knew each other. They all came with high handicaps the lowest being 17 and two other well in to the 20s.
The one off 17 ends up winning the order of merit plus a few other comps and they always played together. Well rumours started going round and someone saw something one day and reported it.
Said member was interviewed about his latest comp and the winning score he put in. Turns out his score on the first hole was two more than he had entered on his card so he was rightly disqualified. No one has seen hide nor hare of him since but it turns out he used to play off 6 as a Junior.
What he had done was take advantage of his two partners who were new to golf and it's rules, they have stayed at the club and are well liked by all.

I noticealotof single figured h/cer and cat 1 players don't put a tee in the ground when cleaning and placing, often putting the ball back nearer the hole on a better lie than is available behind the ball.
