Cheats in your club.......

Also saw a lad drop a ball on 18 when he couldn't find his own, I think this was definitely in a comp but what do you do? Report him and it's your word against his?

I would say that it depends on the type of comp, whether you were certain that he had put his card in and also if you were certain that you had seen the whole incident. For example if it was a Stableford and he couldn't find his ball but had thrown one down to play out the hole with no intention of scoring on the hole. Or possibly if you had missed the start of the incident and he had declared his ball unplayable and was taking a penalty drop.

But if you had seen the whole thing, he had put in a card and tried to claim that he had scored on that hole then absolutely report him.

Interesting one at our club a few years ago. Two members were expelled from the club for cheating, having been watched by members using binoculars. They took the club to court but their solicitor failed to lodge some documents in time & the case was thrown out. They then sued the solicitor, who defended himself by saying that the members' case was so weak & they were so obviously cheating that, had he defended them to the best of his ability, they would have still lost. The solicitor won the case. The case attracted a lot of local publicity at the time.

I was playing in a bounce 4BBB a few months back where my opponent accidentally hit his ball while addressing his put....he said 'it moved but no penalty'...I said 'no you touched it cause i heard the hit'....

Anyway my PP did not see it and his PP said nothing although looking a bit sheepish. While it made no difference to our game they were in a pairs game with two other 2 balls and there was some money on it...potentially a 150 quid if they won. But it was his word against mine and he put it down as a 5 rather than a six as i think it should have been.....he didn't win.

There was a guy in our group who was so notorious for miscounting his shots in his favour that his name has become synonymous with cheating. (Lets say his name is 'Charlie') Now when we play amongst ourselves and jokingly dispute a score we ask 'Is that a Charlie five or a real five?'
We don't let him play in our group anymore.

Yes exactly, it's ok me going into the clubhouse raising hell without knowing the full situation, it's more likely I'd make myself look a fool.
In this particular case both me and my PP were watching him as he was acting very sheepishly and kept looking around to see if anyone was looking. It was almost a giveaway with what he was about to do.

Definitely seen people cheating at my club and have both reported it myself and seen other people report them. Outside of one person being told not to turn up to a midweek friendly roll-up, nothing has been done at all. Which reflects really badly on the club and the people in power at the time.

It's people who simply comment "they're just cheating themselves" that bug me as well. No, these people are cheating every single person in the club.

If the ball didn't move no penalty, if it did move he must replace it or there's an additional penalty for playing from wrong place, I think ?, but the experts will be along shortly.

Quite a few at ours, and they get away with it.

They go out in Wednesday comps for "their point one". Always seem to go to pieces on the last few holes on a Saturday with maybe a couple of 4 putts here and there or walking off when they are otherwise playing well but out of contention. Funny that they can hold it together in the big comps?!?!?

I doubt there's a club in the land without this type of cheat. As for the "leather wedge" types, we've had a few over the years and they've generally been dealt with with appropriate bans etc. They usually don't come back.

someone from my club was thrown out for Cheating he then took the club to court and lost... he has joined 2 other clubs who knew full well his history, but let them in anyway.

I've not heard of any cheats at my current club but there was a lad at my old club who had a talent of being able to find his ball in the rough which could be up to a foot long whenever he went in it.

I heard stories of him putting a ball under his glove, then putting the glove down where he said he found the ball so he wouldn't lose it as he goes to get a club from his bag.

Too many at my club and after the way the club delt with the last one despite blatant evidence i and a few others have decided to boycott all future comps.

Sad but necessary imo

Did a small cheat myself the other day. Winter rules say you can replace the ball if on the fairway. It was a par five 490 yards, and I drove my ball poorly, but straight, about 130 yards I would say. I picked the ball up, cleaned it, and placed it by the pin. I then putted for two, giving me an albatross.

That will get your PPR down from 1.6!

You mean you DON'T drive it 490 yards.....I'm shocked!

2 of out a 3 ball at mine the other should have been done as he knew what was going on, 2 of them were club council members, we watched one on separate occasions hack his way up the 5th hole as we were on the 13th green we checked in score for the on HDID it was down as a 4 both both times lucky if he made 8. We reported the fact as did other lads and it was washed under the carpet as the lad couldn't remember what he'd scored on the hole.

Rumours and allegations unknown at my club.
However I firmly believe if you cannot call a golfer on the course if you see a breach in the rules you should not do it later.

Sensible words. But nothing against mentioning to comp or handicap secretary that you were unsure about certain things you saw happening. No accusations - just uncertainty. They may have heard similar from other sources and need further 'evidence/observations' to be able to approach the player.

I wouldn't necessarily call him a cheat but there is one guy who has a very loose interpretation of the rules, especially in the winter.

Another chap I know has been known to miraculously find a ball on the edge of woodland with a full swing when we know full well that it went miles into the woods. Never seen him do it personally but I'm informed that it happens quite often.
