Charles Kennedy Dies!

As I've said on here before, I've got deep admiration for Charlie Kennedy. His vocal opposition to the war in Iraq shone out like a beacon thru meek acceptance. The demons he's fought are dreadful and I hope they're not connected, but I fear the worst. Severe alcoholism and defeat last month combined makes me think bad thoughts.

RIP Charlie, Scotland just got a wee bit less colourful.

I fear this also - I pray that my fears are unfounded.

Just heard on the BBC Michael Cockerill say that he was already very down prior to the General Election as he could see the likely outcome.

For a man with the issues he already had I fear the result may have been on e step too far.

Whilst he may have been a "career politician", having entered the House at the age of 23 he was, thankfully, not an "Identikit man".

The world is now a poorer place, having lost a man of genuine principle.

RIP Charlie.

Came across as a likeable guy, politics will be poorer without him imo.

As others have said, he seemed a geuine and decent fella. Had his demons like most of us do but he was very definitely not a Westminster Clone.

Sad news indeed.

He was a true gentleman, and was well aware the coalition would be a big blow for the LIb Dems when it came to the last election and was proved right.

A real shame for him to lose his seat and is father so close together.

RIP Charlie boy.

Salmond using a dead man to further the SNP's agenda? This won't sit well with many.

No Salmond didn't - it was quite clear in what Salmond said on Radio 5Live this morning that he mentioned in passing that 'Kennedy's heart wasn't in the BT campaign'

If you know anything about the referendum debate you'll know that Charles Kennedy thought the BT strategy and messages were wrong and that he didn't agree with them - this being rather upsetting for Kennedy as he was passionate for the Union. Salmond was just reflecting on that in passing, and his comment has been used out of context and in giving no background to Charles Kennedy's thoughts on the BT campaign the comment is being deliberately misrepresented (see article in a well known Scottish Sunday newspaper linked to below)

I've listened to the soundcloud clip offered up by the Spectator of Campbell and Salmond discussing CK, and at no point does he mention BT, the referendum or CK opinion? Now I'm sure Salmond said what is being reported, so if someone could provide the audio I'd really appreciate it.

Here's the blog that started whole Salmond is a meanie, along with audio of interview:

There is some truly awful stuff being posted up here by what seems to be very bitter unionist supporters.
Basically blaming Kennedy's death on the SNP.
They seem to have forgotten that the LibDems ditched him pretty sharpish.

Yet on my football forum which is staunchly SNP virtually all of posts are in praise of the man.

Sorry DfT - think you are misreading things as don't think anyone here is near blaming the SNP for Charlie Kennedy's death.
