Thank you all again for your input
I would only say it might be the shafts producing better shots with the XRs are the shafts flex stiffer .Thank you very much for all of your excellent responses. This forum is a great source of info (and definitely gives me food for thought before spending)
I was definitely a lot more careful and spent more time with my address than I do with mine as was worried about hitting the ground etc or damaging the clubs and this may have had a rather large impact on how I played.
I found the Callaway did indeed produce some monster shots, my pings were adjusted when I got them by the pro due to me needing something a tad longer than standard (I am tall with very short arms, much like a T-Rex)
I'm heading out the the range tonight so will spend some time with my Pings and maybe even pick up some of the Demo clubs to see how other clubs feel too.

most iron heads these days are similar the big difference is shafts.
Check what shafts were in the pros clubs and try get some trial clubs with these shafts.
Try lots of combos before you buy,
I know your new but a fitting will help identify your spec
Then look for some used in that spec.
You've not played with XRs have you? Great clubs but uncontrollable for distance
Are you sure it's not operator error?
Wouldn't have thought so - similar to the previous X series irons. Nice clubs but you got one every now and again that went 30/40 yards further.
Just out of interest, from a physics point of view how is that possible?
No but it's the person swinging them that matters. You've not played with XRs have you? Great clubs but uncontrollable for distance
