I am looking to join a club in the coming month before the new season and have contacted some clubs in the the area. As I don't have a handicap, in one instance, I have been told that if I wanted to join I would have to complete a certificate of competence with the local pro.

Does anyone have experience of what this entails including possible costs and how long it may take to do?

I was imagining it may just involve the pro watching you hit some shots on the range, but I may be wrong and it could be more formal/involved than that...

Thanks for any info

I've heard of this sort of thing on the Continent before but not over here.

A good idea, though, if you ask me....

I'd be looking for another club if it's any more than the Pro having a quick look at you. Bound to be other clubs in the area crying out for members..

If its just a quick look at your swing and a brief chat about the laws/etiquette of the game then I quite like the sound of it.
