Celtic Manor

Going to Celtic Manor next Monday for 2 nights, 3 rounds on all 3 courses.

Anyone been there, what's it like? What's the resort hotel like and any other tips before i go!

Cheers.

Stayed twice this year played Montgomerie teice and 2010 wanted to play the Roman Road but Senior Tour was about to be staged. Montgomerie a nice course though I would suggest a trolley (for some reason you couldnt hire electric ones for the Monty) as it has some steep climbs, great views. They will make you very welsome, would give the buffet a miss in the main hotel and go to the steak bar in the Monty Cubhouse so much better. 2010 is a slog not for the average golfer but nice to play on a Ryder cup course but for me too long and not great views as its in the valley. It can be expensive in the bars (but nice lamb and mint pies at the 1/2 way hut on the Monty)... Spa is ok if all is working and the gym is ok..amazingly I used both.

Playing there on 23 August in the Welsh handicap team championships so reading these comments with interest. We also get a complimentary round the day before but the first tee time for that is 5pm so not expecting to get more than fourteen holes in before it gets dark.

Heard somewhere that you get complimentary club cleaning after your round and a pyramid of balls to practice with on grass range beforehand. Is this true?

Yes. But dont get exited about the club cleaning. Mine come back even dirtier

I enjoyed my stay as I was with a group of mates. Service at the golf shop and bar was excellent and the courses were decent. For me, the Belfry comparison is valid. Some great holes but as the sum of the whole not in my top 20. Worth playing to say you've been there but expensive (certainly at the hotel)

Here what your saying and each to their own. I love to play links and certainly rank RSG and RCP as 2 of my favs BUT given the choice to play one course I would probably end up on a course more like 2010.
What gets my goat is those who belittle courses like 2010. It might not be someone's personal favourite, but i struggle to see how they can't rate it as at least 'very good, but not my cup of tea'

As a resort it absolutely works. I didn't find it too pricey and there are always the delights of Newport to look forward to:)
I really enjoy the Monty course, it's really good fun. The 2010 experience is pretty good but the course isn't the star. I found it a bit of a slog, but I'd go back definitely.

I thought RSG would be your no1, especially after the heroics there put anything at the Ryder cup into the shade.

I'm sure Craig & rich have fond memories to

I really liked the 2010 course, it's one of my favourites. Though it's not fashionable to like it, personally I don't get why so many people bash it.
I played it in June last year and it was in glorious condition, greens were insanely fast and slopey.

Haven't played the others.

2010 is great, start is fairly sedate then it gets going. Monty was probably my favourite course, like and old school course, Roman road has some really nice holes, but those around the valley had people walking all over the place (not golfers) when we were there and it felt like Disneyland. Pricey bars and food, the Pub that they have associated with them is very nice and really good value, they offer a free shuttle so worth taking up the offer. £15 a night to park in the car park is a bit rich when you consider the overall cost of a weekend there.

Is there free parking anywhere on site?
