Going to Celtic Manor next Monday for 2 nights, 3 rounds on all 3 courses.

Anyone been there, what's it like? What's the resort hotel like and any other tips before i go!

Cheers.

I went just after it first opened, before they built the 2010 course.
It was okay, hotel is nice.
Found the predecessor to the 2010 bloody tough.
The other courses were a bit bland but I understand it has got a lot better over the years.
I think you'll enjoy it

It's ok - Montgomery is the better of the courses - expensive in the hotel

They make you feel welcome though

I have been and thought all the courses were distinctly average. The hotel was fine but overpriced, plus it is in Wales so rain is likely!

These minor gripes aside, if you are with good company then I am sure you will have a good time.

I went there last year for the first time, didn't play the 2010 but did play the other two. Both were ok but I'd advise using a buggy even though I don't particularly like the things. Worst thing was the pace of play, well over five hours for both rounds - that was at the weekend so it may be better in the week - and not a sign of any marshalls to try to speed things up. Lots of groups, some pretty big and if you get behind them you're not likely to be let through.

One big tip is to pre-book your restaurant if you're eating in the hotel. We didn't and couldn't get into any of them, ended up eating in one of the bars and was not impressed. We could have gone into Cardiff - give Newport a wide berth it's a craphole.

All courses are great and the customer service is great. however this is the only place i have been to that charge more for beer and food than the belfry. We go twice a year and simply walk down the road to a local pub for great food and cheap beer. Problem sorted.

Oh, you have to have a buggy for the monty course. Unless you all have legs like race horse's that is

Went about 3 weeks ago, played all the courses and enjoyed the Roman Road the most but the Montgomery had some nice holes as well. Thought 2010 was bit bland but loved the separate clubhouse and experience.

Agree with the comment about booking dinner although we weren't impressed with the food in the hotel and ate out in Carleon one of the nights , there is a nice Indian restaurant there.

We had buggies (path only!) so didn't save much on the legs but some of the holes have big gaps between green and tee so thought it was worth it.

Overall i would say a venue off of the list of courses I want to play but wouldn't go back.

I'm from Newport so can tell you it's not raining at the minute!
Caerleon is good for a few beers and nice food, the priory is very nice for food.
The Monty is buggy as very hilly, the other two can be walked no problems.
Lots of water on the 2010 so be prepared to lose a few balls.
Played my course yesterday and ground was rock hard so shouldn't be a problem.
The hotel is lovely and lots to do besides golf, pricey but all 5* hotels are.
Avoid newport though as it's not that nice, especially at night

We go every year and have done since 2010. Play the monty and the 2010 and I never tire of playing them both. Monty has some great hole, 3rd and 10th my favs and the 2010 is great in my opinion. It's in fantastic condition every time I have played it, they look after you really well and the course is full of risk and reward holes and some great memories from the Ryder cup.
Give me the 2010 over some of those 'only rated good because it's exclusive or been around for a zillion years links course' anyday.

Celtic Manor will appeal to the guys that like Parkland courses - manicured fairways like an US course - it's like the Belfry - some will love it some will hate it

For me it has the full feel of corporate and manufactured - a bit like the Grove. For me those type of courses try and have the full waited on hand and foot experience so that you feel exclusive

I prefer to have the course do the talking - no need for all the added extras just let the course and it's character put you under its spell - right now those course are as you say the historic links courses.

I've played the Brabazon at the Belfry and really enjoyed it. I've read a lot of reviews saying that it's boring but like you say, I love playing on perfectly manicured courses.

Here what your saying and each to their own. I love to play links and certainly rank RSG and RCP as 2 of my favs BUT given the choice to play one course I would probably end up on a course more like 2010.
What gets my goat is those who belittle courses like 2010. It might not be someone's personal favourite, but i struggle to see how they can't rate it as at least 'very good, but not my cup of tea'

Then you will like Celtic Manor

In terms of the quality of fairways etc then it is very good - but features and playability etc I wouldn't put it at very good.

We enjoyed it when we went, but as they upgraded us to a suite we might be a bit biased. The Roman Road was okay but no more, I personally enjoyed the 2010, not a classic but a fair test and they make it an experience. We ate in the French restaurant in the old Manor House and enjoyed it, not overly expensive. Pool complex and gym good if you're of that persuasion, Mrs BiM enjoyed the spa. Bars were pricey.

Best part was the staff, the vast majority were Welsh and took a great pride in the place.
