Celebrity spots

Method was in our pro shop paying his green fee many years ago.

We once played an away match at Woodbury Park and Nigel Mansell played for the opposition.

Had a couple of days at the Belfry a couple of years ago with some friends and our last day coincided with Alex Ferguson's charity golf day so we saw the great and the good of the football world around the place. A few ex-England and Utd players I recognised and a few celeb's/actors pointed out to me (I'm a bit distant from that type of thing). Was nice to have a passing Giggsy watch me stiff an 8 iron on one hole as it was the only decent strike I made all day:D. Car park looked a bit fruity with some serious high value items there; Aston's, Ferrari's, etc.

Met "on the course with" Ken Brown walking down the first at Sunningdale the other week. Met Mark Crossfield at Belle Dune last summer, and Theo Walcott was playing at Woburn on Saturday when I was there, but didn't see him myself so I guess that one doesn't count :-)

We let Ronnie Whelan play thru at S&A the other week. Even managed a brief chat in the clubhouse afterwards. Real nice guy.

and I played with montys old caddie Kevin Laffey last year at the local muni. Tremendous golfer and again a real top man.

well can top all your spots and you can close the thread now ;)

The one and only Mark Lawrenson has the pleasure of playing my course at least a few times a year and even tried the not so wonderful catering too (PNE Former players outing)

On a more serous note the Tampa bay Buccs played in front and around us in Florida (champions gate course) last year. I had no idea who they were but they were huge and happy to chat and take photo's with the locals :)

Used to be a member at Woodbury Park when Mansell owned it. He was always around and had many celebrity guests staying, Greg Norman, Gary Player to name a few. I also played him in the second round of the summer knockout (lost on the 16th). They also used to host football teams for summer pre season, Chelsea, Everton Man U have all stayed there.

Alan shearer in front of me at Slaley hall a couple of days after he had relegated Newcastle :-).
Graham onions also at Slaley
Jody ewert on the opposite fairway to me.

Neil Lennon and various other Leicester players over the years have played at my course in Leicestershire when i've been out having a chop.

Brett Rumford uses our club to practice. I use to play regularly with Dan Maskell (BBC tennis commentator for those too young) James Bolam, and James Hunt.

I am not worthy!

Dan (I say!) Maskell was a boyhood hero of mine, as too was James Bolam. Two of my most favouristist TV shows were What Ever Happened to the Likely Lads and When the Boat Comes In.

James Hunt is pretty impressive too for some I dare say, but sadly I've always found F1 about as interesting as the history of egg boxes since the 1950s.

Played VX golf day with Gary Nev in attendance. Following year had Luther Blisset there. Played 2 years ago with Andy Legg, last year with John Gidman and just recently with Willie Thorne at our mobile providers day. Exchanged numbers with Willie for future events. All been genuinely top blokes and fair golfers to boot. At the phone day there is always ex pros, sir Gareth Edwards there this year. Andy Gray and keys last year.

Hunt was strange. So intense on the course and so critical of his average ability. He use to have two huge alsation dogs in tow and they were the most impeccably behave animals you could imagine. He spoke they obeyed. Maskell was a joy. He talked as he commentated. The very first time I played with him I made a birdie and he came out with "I say what a peach" as though it was a Borg passing shot. As a fourteen year old I found that so funny and had to bite hard on my glove to stiffle my giggles. Great man with a wealth of stories.

What a totally fabulous memory to have. I'm totally in awe and just a little jealous.

Always sad that Bolam and Bewes had a falling out a while ago, as I believe Clement & La Frenais could bring The Likely Lads up to date as pensioners and make a totally brilliant show.

Bolam hated Bewes. Absolutely detested the man. Think it stemmed from Bewes being classically trained and full of certain airs on set on the Likely Lads while Bolam was happy to be one of the boys with the crew and other actors. I worked in the pro shop at the club and sold Bolam the shoes he wore on BBC Pro-Celebrity Golf as he'd forgotten to pack any on the way to Heathrow to fly up to Turnberry.

Played a few holes with Nigel Mansell back in the early nineties at Castletown on the Isle of Man. Great course and thoroughly nice bloke. The motorbike enthusiasts amongst probably heard of Rob McElnea, British superbikes champion around the same time. Paired up with him for a pfourball comp on the same course on the same trip. Really nice down to earth guy.

Interesting info as I understood the big rift came about when Bewes mentioned something about Bolam's private life in a magazine interview one time. It wasn't anything contentious or particularly revealing but nevertheless Jimmy copped the right hump big style.

To me as a massive fan of WHTTLL it was so sad. I have the DVDs and will still often watch them.

Would love them to bury the hatchet and run out the characters of Terry & Bob one last time. Sadly though it seems unlikely.
