Carrying clubs - back problems?

One advantage to carrying round our track is that you can't take trolley's into the heather - so lot's of trekking between trolley and ball goes on.

Can anyone tell me the advantages of carrying a bag full of clubs, drinks, snacks, balls etc??? I cannot think of 1 to be honest.

The drinks and snacks give you the energy to carry the bag with the clubs and the balls.

Although I usually use an electric trolley, there are times when I will carry instead, partly for the exercise, but I find it can also speed up the pace of play, as you can take the shortest line between shots, greens and tees, where often trolley and buggy users will be sent on diversions. Mind you, the pace of walking between shots towards the end of a round can get slower.

I've never had any back issues carrying but did switch to a push trolley a few months back as I felt my lack of fitness was affecting my game and have never looked back. I also started getting back into running at about the same time I got the trolley so fitness is improving and carrying would probably be OK now - but I'm not going to. Loving the trolley, can't believe I resisted it dor so long

I do a lot of Taekwondo and as a result of that gym & fitness training to, so put my back through a lot of stresses and strains anyway. Anything that can prevent me from carrying weight outside of that unnecessarily can only help prolong that hobby and my health imho. So for me I use my push trolley most of the time, there are some occaisions where I feel like carrying and do but thats probably one in every 15 rounds but then the only thing in my bag will be clubs, balls and a drink, if I need anything else I stick with the trolley.

I will carry my pencil bag for those rounds with limited number of clubs or after work rounds when I may only take a half set with me. But whether carrying is good or bad for the back, why take the risk when something else can carry the load for you.

You'll lose weight by burning more calories compared to a trolley..........

Minimal difference.
You're walking the same distance - actually possibly further with a trolley - and, as has been alluded to, the bag is so light(!) that it can't make a difference.

I carry in the Winter becasue I can't be bothered to fit Hedgehogs to my wheels. Spring Summer and Autumn I trolley....

i've carried 100% for the last 2 years. I will play 4 time a week in the summer and sat/sun during winter. I will be buying a trolley for summer next year to simply save on the sweaty shirts.
I'm a big guy and I will say that after a long weekend, my back is a bit tight on a monday morning. During the rounds I feel fine, but the weight must put pressure on your back after 9 hours of lumping it around.
Speaking with a physio friend he said along as you don't feel strained, carrying would help you build lower back muscles due to increased use. Kinda like weight lifting.

I can't get a trolley even though I'm sure they have some advantages. I mentioned the fact I may to a couple of people, I'll never forget the look of distain in their eyes.

People can be very cruel. If you want to join the pipe and slippers brigade you go for it Nick

I'm going to hold off the trolley for a bit. I'll see if I can keep up with you and the other youngsters for a while yet !

that must make me proper matcho.....grrrrr

im 23 and use a trolly albeit a cheap dunlop one!

i had a car crash last year though which messed my back up for me. could manage carrying the bag for about 5 holes before it was hurting.

"you have to carry" sounds like Macho BS to me.

I don't agree. Macho would be saying I put my clubs in a buggy then I pull the buggy around the course as a trail of strength.

There is nothing macho about carrying golf clubs. It is just a perfectly normal thing to do with no heroic connotations.

I have had several operations on my back ,carrying and walking kills it dead , pulling a trolley is nearly as bad and just plain walking is quite bad , Im all for:whoo: buggies:whoo: all though i am to tight to hire one . I played 36 holes yesterday like a proper idiot and can hardly walk today

I switched from a carry bag to a push trolley about 12 months ago. I'm 32. I have dodgy knee through playing football and the push trolley was an obvious next step!
All comes down to personal preference I guess.

Too many people using a trolly these days, messing courses up in the process simple because they're lazy.

Golf coures weren't designed for huge tour bags on eletric trolleys with batteries that weigh a tonne. In the wet these things wheel spin and wear the course out around greens.

As for carrying, use a pencil bag with a double strap. Less bag clatter, less shaft tangle and weighs a lot less than a standard carry bag!

A lot of clubs deliberately send trollies a long way around greens specifically to avoid churning the course up. I've never had a problem with wheel spin in the wet

I was half joking Homer.

I guess it comes down to someones personal choice and if a trolley makes its more enjoyable for them, fair play.

There is serious risk of course damage as the vast majority of people use electric trolleys these days though. Common logic dictates on a wet day, if theres 100 heavy trolleys going over the course it'll do more damage than 100 people carrying. If you keep multiplying that by more and more days it'll have a bad impact on the courses. Granted, some courses can stand up to that easily, others not so.

Electric trollies are banned at my course if too wet, and rightly so.

When that happens I use a lightweight stand bag and and not have to worry about carrying waterproofs, as I'm wearing them!
