Just wondering what you would do.

Went to a local independent shop for a new hall and stair carpet. Carefully defined the type of underlay we wanted usually buy the stuff online so know what we like). It's all on the invoice etc, and it's the same as the rest of the house.

The guys came to fit it today but I wasn't here. The wife was working from home. I got back from work just as they were finishing. After they had left I noticed the offcuts of underlay and they were of an inferior type and thickness (8mm as opposed to 11mm). I know from experience the difference in price is negligible. Maybe £15 -£20 all in.

So, do I call the company and see what they'll do about it and live with the harm to the environment if they replace it? Or am I just being daft and we should just live with it?

Nope. Carpet people I've known all say that good underlay is crucial. That is not just sales people, that is from people in the game, often fitters as it happens, who were just chatting. Get them back to do the job you asked for.

No there taking the Mickey, ask them why a differant underlay was fitted as against what was agreed and paid for.

Insist they come back and re fit. I would be bogged off.

Cheers guys. Definitely bogged off. Think it was a genuine mix up in communication. I always get the good stuff but I think I'll insist on replacing.

You must get them back. The quality of the underlay is more important than the quality of the carpet. I’d expect a new carpet to last 10/15 years maybe more so it’s important to get the “foundation” right.

Yeah. Definitely feel bad but know they have to sort it. We'll see how good the after sales support is 😀 Cheers.

Don’t feel too bad, the fitter would only have fitted what was supplied so he is not in the wrong, the carpet shop will have to pay him to refit the carpet, they may be able to salvage the underlay and fit it elsewhere but in reality the mark up is probably so big they will just bin it.

I would be concerned about the damage to the edges of the carpet once it is re-fitted.
Hall and stairs always wear out quicker that the rest of the rooms.

Difficult one......….I would probably ask for a bit of cash back for their mess up say 10 to 15% of total bill.
I certainly would not settle for the difference in the cost of the underlay.

I’ve had things done incorrectly once or twice, the time I didn’t question it was easy but regretted later. The time I followed up and had it redone was short term pain and hard work but I felt better later on.
