I change insurers every year to get the best deal, when I hit 50 I did Saga but had to change the next year as they did the same as all insurers and hoisted the premium.

The worst thing as you hit 50 and use Saga, is the magazine and bumph they keep sending , it does rub it in how old you are!!

Wow, mine cost £100 a month after 4yrs no claims! I think my first car cost about £2500 a year to insure 3rd party on a 1.0 litre corsa :( and that was cheapest by a few grand! Being young does have it's disadvantages

I have a 17yr old son about to start lessons, and I fear I'm in for the inevitable beating up over Insurance premiums.

One or two people in the same position tell me of premiums of £2500 - no wonder so many drive uninsured (and no, I don't in anyway condone it).

My 2 are both new drivers.

One got insured about 6 months ago. 18yo £2,200 on a Pug 206

The other is 17, not got a car yet but the cheapest quote he's had is from Adrian Flux on a Mk2 Clio for £2,600

Using the online comparison sites he can't find a quote on any car for under £3k

I'm 23 years old and would pay over 2,500 a year if I went on my own. I have to piggyback on my fathers insurance to get it under £100/month.

That's what I get for being young, male and having 6 points :(

Have you put yourself as a named driver on their insurance? Putting my dad on my policy as a named driver dropped it by about £200.

I had a work colleague who had loads of money who at 30 was still on his dad's insurance. The thing is his dad NEVER drove it.
Then he went to Germany and had to pay top whack insurance( as he didn't have any no claims.
How we laughed.
The trouble is, if he had been caught or had a claim, he woud have been gestuffed

Yeh, quite a few companies have clocked onto having a parents as policyholder and the son/daughter as named driver.

My policy has me as the policyholder/main driver then when I put my Dad on as a named driver it reduces the quote by a few hundred :D

Please, if you get a renewal quote, threaten to cancel and see how much you can save. In my case it was 30% off their LOWEST price.

I find that's the same with most things. Few years ago I bought a Japanese Import Toyota Celica, and strangely, no "specialist import insurers" would insure me! They'd never heard of the car before!! Huh?! Anyway, my usual broker quoted me £700, and when I started to leave he said, "Hang on...", then tapped away at his keyboard for a few seconds, "...I can do it for £408 if you're interested?". Nearly £300 off in under a minute. Just shows they're all out to con us.

Same with my phone when I was with '3'. I was paying £15 a month.

Me: I want to cancel please.
3: We can do £15 a month and a new phone.
Me: I want to cancel please.
3: How about £12 a month and a new phone?
Me: No, I want to cancel, I only spend about £2 a month as it is.
3: Okay, £7 a month and a new phone.
Me: No!
3: £5 a month and a new phone?

Ridiculous!!

I think admiral do a policy where you can put all of the household cars and house insurance on the one policy which works out at a fair saving, maybe worth a shout.

Car insurance....don't get me started.

My favourite line of all is "how does that sound?" after a ridiculously expensive quote.

My usual reply is "do you record these conversations for some b+**+cks reason?" and if the answer is "Yes, Sir" I normal add, "that is the worst quote I've had today and given your utterly shameful indication that you want to take me for every penny you can, I'm never phoning you or your company again....."

Works for me.

f.w.i.w. I pay way under £200 for all but my BMW...which is nearer £300, but I do all the big miles in it and practically anyone I know/have met/doesn't get drunk can drive it.

Yes. Well, my missus.

I put her as named driver on mine and it went down £70.

My lad put her as named driver on his application and it went up

I suppose Leftie will pay the least as he doesn't drive very far ;)
Jk :)

That is below the belt and totally uncalled for!!

You're picking on poor Leftie because of his age - that's against the law!! :D

For what it's worth, Leftie's so old his insurance company pay him.. :)

ANYONE who is driving on a Policy in their parents name, but who's parents never actually drive the car, is risking a lot. I was reading a report online about this, its called 'Fronting' by the industry, and IF you have a Claim, there is a distinct possibility that they wouldnt pay out.

Quite how they can prove it is another matter, - but just thought I'd let ya know.

Parent as a 2nd driver is a better way to go, but far more expensive of course.

because I don't want buildings and contents (the flat is covered by the service charge) I get screwed for contents cover. they all seem to think a one-bed flat is a penthouse and the minimum level of contents would furnish a four-bedroom house!

"Insurance ‘fronting' occurs when someone other than the main driver of a vehicle is incorrectly declared as the policy holder. An example of this would be a parent insuring a car and declaring themselves as the main driver in order to reduce the insurance premium, when in fact their son or daughter will be the main user of the vehicle. By doing this, motorists are committing fraud and under contract terms, could invalidate an insurance policy."

I hate the insurance industry and it surprises me that I can actually bear to talk to a player at my g.c. that works in the trade. He gave me "the nod" the other day on two motoring-related things.
No.1 - "crash for cash" claims are costing every single policy holder about £40 a year which the industry is determined to stamp out and
No.2 - some of the main underwriting firms are looking into persuading the insurance co.s to prosecute drivers "fronting" on their policies.
So - if you are "fronting" a) you might not successfully make a claim and b) your insurance company might take you to court.

not good. :(
