I have not bought one.
But has anyone else?
If so, what do you do when you're driving behind someone who is undoubtedly using their mobile phone and the camera clearly shows this and the cars registration?

Do you inform the old bill or mind your own business ?

I have had one for a while now, seen and filmed some very daft things, but the police don't want to know.

Had on film a chap crossing over the White line while drinking coffee then go through a red light causing a van to mount the pavement, stopped off at the local cop shop, told them about it and offered to send in the vid clip, but was told that would not be enough to charge the driver as no police was there at the time !!!

Unbelieveable

The same obviously doesn't apply to there own speed cameras!

I think it is probably to do with legal loop holes and they couldn't use it in a court of law as evidence to convict someone.

Haven't people been done via you tube vids and people filming themselves doing 100 etc ?

I heard on the radio a few months ago that there are organisations and companies emerging that will take videos of traffic offences and liase with the police to seek prosecution. Like this one policewitness.com

The main issue the police seem to have is that it takes a lot of time and manpower to deal with the volume of submissions. It's a developing problem for the police, technology is growing and spreading at a faster rate than the police resources available to process it.

What cams do you use for this? I'd have thought the likes of a go-pro would be a bit of an expensive option?

Not far from the truth although also not entirely insurmountable.

Very true, also issues of identification and the need to get the person who recorded the incident to court & give evidence; not necessarily as easy as handing the police the video & walking away.

I get why they would be good for traffic accidents lowering insurance for the young but are people really dropping into the Police stations to report things that have nothing to do with them... WOW.

I think it might be best to let the Police do the Policing!!

All very well and good Alex, assuming there are any around to do the policing. I can't remember the last time I saw a Motorway Patrol in the 2 years of driving the same road.

And is there not a law that its an offence to fail to report a crime? Possibly made that up bit sure I have heard it before.

Ye I get it, I just think that we are rules gone mad, big brother crazy and the like....

The poor driving that I see the most is people doing 20 in a 30 and hitting the brakes hard when a car comes the other way in the other lane... Basically scared people.

As said, you can get them from £10-15 upwards, I have the LS430W Full HD, £120 but a lovely bit of kit, great for night time driving as well.

I did find one website that would take vid's off you, but only if they were sent the SD card and not a copy, I use a 32GB card, so didn't want to be sending off a £20 card every time I saw an idiot.

As I said in my first post, the police didn't want to know about the recording i had as they couldn't use it to charge someone, but last week in Salisbury, while sat in traffic, I saw a chap having ago at a PCO, soon sorted as the driver drove off.

A few of us stopped to see if he was ok, as he was just sitting on the pavement, but within 5 minutes the police were everywhere, asking if anyone seen what happened and did anyone get the number down, I said I could do better than that as I had it on tape, this time they said that they could use it in court and wanted me to hand over the card for them to use !!

So I told the copper about the bad driving I had on tape a while ago, but all he said was " each case is different and when its one of our own we go that little further "

I said I would take the tape into the cop shop later, but was told I had to hand it over there and then.

Talk about one rule for them !!

My brother has been using these for quite a while and he has them on the dashboard and at the back window, both in his car and his vans. He mostly uses them for insurance purposes if he has an accident and needs to prove fault.
Just last month, late at night someone knocked on his front door and told him a taxi had just driven down the side of his new pathfinder, the person gave my brother the taxi firm but did not get the reg no, my brother contacted the taxi firm and was told non of their cars were in the area then, my brother went to the police after viewing the footage and they have traced the taxi after it was identified by the camera in his car, he now has a looking like new car and the taxi driver is being prosecuted for dangerous driving and leaving the scene of an accident...result.
So they can come in handy.

Would those people using these cameras hand themselves in to the cop shop if (heaven forbid) they maybe cut in front of someone, strayed into the empty space at traffic lights reserved for cyclists (and to make it easier for lorries/busses to turn) etc and use their recording to help prosecute themselves?

Thought not.

:)
