Captain's Drive In

Being new-ish to club golf, I'm not sure what happens at the Captain's Drive in? I assume it's something to do with the new captain taking up office and a ritual spanking of one down the first - and that it's probably good form to turn out for it?

But surely there's more to it than that. What happens at your place?

I think you all stand round the first tee giving totally insincere words of encouragement while secretly hoping he'll duff it. At least we do for the society captain.

We have the added bonus of a competiton where you place £1.00 in the kitty and guess the distance he is going to clatter it. It's then measured out and the closest guess is the winner. "Air Shot" is always the one that goes first

Last club I was at had a Captain's Nearest the Pin instead. The course ends with a Par 3 and Hon Capt wombles off to the tee with a couple of clubs and 3 balls.
We had a sweep on the nearest ball to the hole. I won one year by guessing that he wouldn't get halfway!!
Then they have a mixed comp with outgoing captains playing with the in-coming captains.

Don't know what they do at APGC but I guess I'll find out soon

Our kids line the fairway (and the woods), and the one who gets the ball gets a prize. Sounds dangerous, but kids are cheap.

I think we're fairly traditional. There is a competition to guess the length of the drive with the men betting on the their captain and women on theirs (money to the Captains charity) and then we all go out for a mixed greensome event

Ours was last week and it was my first. Amazed at how many people turned up to watch the driving bit then play in mixed Texas Scramble.There was a lot of charity stuff going on but also lots of prizes, nearest pin on all par 3s etc.
We had 'shot-gun' start but I misunderstood the draw and arrived on wrong tee - had to puff up hill to next one and shanked first shot in hedge. Team still came in 2nd so took home some cash

Had my ''drive in'' after AGM in November,8:30pm floodlight from club house Lady Captain goes first and hits one staight down the middle (she had own driver and spikes on, just a bit of pressure no spikes pro gets a driver out of the shop, and lucky for me spanked down the fairway, the pro provide us with the balls that light up when you hit them, and the first is partlliy lit with sercurtiy lighting from the milltray base, and that was my drive in. We have a Captains swansong when the mens, senior, lady captain play with the pro, the winners are the teams that beat our score best 2 scores to count stapleford.
