Hi,

On Saturday I played in a Bogey competition at my club which they are claiming is a qualifying competition.
Due to the recent weather condition the following rules were put in place:
1, preferred lies ‘through the green’ (through the greens means anywhere on the course except hazards).

2, free drop for a plugged ball anywhere on the course including the rough ‘through the green’ applies.

3, Bunkers on the course are all G.U.R. relief maybe taken out of bunker nearest point of relief no nearer the hole.

What are people’s thought’s on this? How can it be classed as a qualifying competition with those rules in place?

wished all our bunkers were GUR, one killed my 52* wedge on sunday and all i was told by the course manager was " well that how it is, you know our bunkers are low and in current weather conditions sand has obviously washed through the bunker. "

geee thanks... doesnt help my injured wedge does it!

Not really but some clubs could have this as reduction only.

how do you get to this?

you can't start a comp as RO, it's a function of performance in a Q comp.

as to the OP - I believe that preferred lies TTG would rule it out as a qualifing comp, 2's fine and 3's a problem again.

i those conditions you should play well. a perfect lie every time!

Well that's why I can't understand how it's being kept as a qualifier, I was +6 and thought it was quite easy. The problem is only about 20% of the field beat the course.
The reason I ask is that a few people are now being cut which will bring their handicap below 7.5 which disqualifies them from an Essex team competition we are playing in.

You can't declare a comp reductions only, it has to be a qualifier and can only be reductions only if CSS works out greater than SSS +3

I'll take your word for it but we used to always have our first stableford of the year a RO, this was the first year it wasn't?

Edit to add, is this no RO a recent change?

I think the clubs have to get permission off the regional golf unions to run qualifying comps with preferred lies which given the recent weather I wouldn't imagine many knock backs?
You say it seemed easy but majority of the field obviously never or more than 20% would of beaten there handicaps.
Maybe your club will have to follow the guy from belguims the other night and fiddle the system so you can play in the team comp! :-) :-).

I think bobmac is referring to 33-8/27 ; which was also my reference when I said that 3 above was 'a problem' :)

rule 33-8/27 all players must stand on one leg when approaching a GUR bunker (Kryton):smirk:

Thanks Duncan for clarifying its specific bunkers for that rule, so it looks like they must have sought GU approval in which case they can do that if approved.

The first direct reference to outlawing RO comps was in 2008 but I'm reasonably sure that it dates from earlier than that.

You can't do that.

but theres still plenty of courses that do.

at ours this weekend our medal comp was deemed the following "All bunkers GUR, lift clean and place everywhere bar hazards and Reduction only"

So whats the punishment for clubs that don't follow to the letter of the law?
