basically, i have a mate who now wants to change his irons and is similar to what I am so ive been selling the benefits too him but im struggling to explain this.

His driver swing speed is up in the 114mph area so he swings hard (he just got a new driver so he knows). However he still has S300 shafts in his irons. He says they are ok but im not so sure cos his swing speed is way above the S300 catagory. Wat effect would the whippy iron shafts have on his shots.

He seems to hit it high alot but i dont think he gets a very penetraiting flight to the shots so im wondering if the shafts are causing this? He also doesnt seem to get the distance with his irons that i would expect compared to mine as we both hav similar swings and even wen he connects well

I tried to explain but i dont have good enough knowledge to put a valid arguement to him. I guess what im trying to say is would you have s300's in your irons when you swing so fast

I would exoect to see greater distance but less control with a shaft that is too soft for a player. The ball would go higher and longer, maybe too high.

They wouldnt be just as straight as usual either, I tried a firm shaft (I reckon it was regular to firm) and every shot went straight right.

His driver SS will be higher than that of his iron SS.
S300 may just be on the soft side.

I know that with shafts too soft blocky right is a ball path that can occur and a generally bigger dispersion as well. Distance control will also be less accurate.

Most Tour pros with 114mph driver speed will be in X 100s or PX 6.5.

6 iron speed is usually about 85% of driver speed, so in this case around 95mph or so.

He should get a fitting session at a fitter used to dealing with better players.

If he is right handed i would expect him to pull his iron shots left....

I do that, off a much lower swing speed but looking to change as mine are also too soft.
I can get lots of height and distances are, I think, OK for my iron swing speed (74) and pretty consistent. (7-i 155 yds)

Dispersion is the killer.

Too soft often makes the ball go high and hook, but depends on the player's swing and some people slice it. Either way, loss of control, and a stiffer shaft usually lowers the flight and tightens up the direction. Too stiff is often low and right but again some people compensate with a flick of the hands.

It is also worth remembering about shaft lenght! It has been proven that a shorter shaft can increase average distance by reducing dispersion. I had this problem with my 5 wood and now its a peach!

I have the DGS300 in my new (second hand) irons, I do not know if they are right for me yet as recovering from surgery still. As soon as I have had a few range sessions under my belt I will know and if needed I am going to get them checked by a professional fitter. I ex[ect the first thing he will do is lot a little bit off the top of each :)

i see what ur saying about loss of accuract as he hits a massive draw with the irons, and hits his driver arrow straight. It strange but even he cnt understand where the draw is coming from!

And for distance control he has become super inconsistant. Im usually a club longer than him but on our previous round, sometimes he was shorter but other times he just found 20 yards on his irons from no where
