Well we had a callaway demo day at our place today. As I'm in the market for a 3 wood I thought it would be rude not to have a go.
Played 18 and went straight down to the range for my chance to try some new woods out.
I have been hitting my driver very well as of late. However I struggle to get the 3 wood air born off the deck. The callaway rep was already made aware I was looking for a 3w replacement and got me to hit a few with my current RAZR fit extreme. I hit a low piercing flight with it but its a difficult club for me to launch. When it goes well it flies. However I do find it difficult to pure consistently. The rep pointed out that the shot I can hit was what the club is designed to do. I hit a 4 balls off the deck/mat and was getting about 220 carry with the good hits.
He handed me a xr wood and instantly the ball launched nice and high but not balloon like. Very soft draw and felt incredibly easy to hit. Half a dozen more hits and all were very similar. Great dispersion and I was getting 225 carry 245 total. Turns out this was a 17° 4 wood.
Next up was the 15° 3 wood. Equally as easy to hit and again. Great ball flight and even better numbers. 240 carry with 262 total. Spin rate was around 3200. I was amazed how well and easily I was getting the ball up off the mat.
I also tried the new big Bertha but this felt almost identical to my current driver and 3 wood. The numbers were slightly better than my RAZR fits but only 6 yards better on the driver.
I tried the xr driver but it felt very soft off the face. The numbers were good but again only 5 yards better than current driver. I was getting am average of 2526 spin on the driver and hit it very well so he said I'd be mad the change it any time soon.
However I'm almost certain I'll be ordering an xr 3wood in the very near future. Would like a hit of the 915 3 wood and possibly an R15 if I can get one in black.
Bottom line if anyone is out there for a 3 wood that is borderline cheating then the xr is well worth a swing. I was hitting the stiff project x shaft.
