Call up holes

Have never seen the point of a call up hole unless it is the 18th. Yes you don't have to wait on the call up hole tee, but when you have played out the hole, the group in front are usually still be walking up their drives on the next hole, rather than being out of range. Unless you are let through you can never play a round quicker than the group in front. All you seem to be doing is moving the point where you have to wait. By waiting for you to play up the group in front are slowed down, so the overall round must takes longer.

I also think it can be dangerous, as a lot call up holes are long par 3's, and the group behind will be hitting long irons or woods, and not necessarily that accurately. In theory we have a call up hole on the par 3 sixth, but it usually takes less time to play out the hole, than to finish off the 5th which plays the hardest hole on the course. Never seen any one called up since I joined the club.

Thanks Phil. Those sort of damages must be close to his insurance liability? A lot of car insurance liabilities 'only' go up to £500,000.

From what I've found its not a problem. visitors arent allowed at peak times, Saturday mornings or Sundays so its never an issue. I'm sure that when visitors do come they are told of the rule, but if it was midweek for example, it's not busy so no rush, so it wouldnt be a problem anyway.

During weekends, when the comps are on, its members only, and we all know the rules, so again, not an issue. Perhaps different from most clubs but it works at ours and helps keep the pace of play moving along nicely.

Homer was a member for a few years, I'm sure he has far more experience with them than me, ive only been there since January.

Ah yes the par 3's at Wimbledon Common. The first plays longer than the yardage anyway as it is usually very wet in front of the green and with OB left and trouble right a lot of members will play to lay up and try and chip and putt rather than blasting a driver or 3 wood. It was never an issue. The 8th was the biggest issue. It is the first on the London Scottish course and players alternate so there is pressure to keep moving. This plays shorter and its easy to find the green. In general, the consensus is always to wait and let the group putt out rather than call players down. It just seems to keep it flowing better. The 12th is 245 yards and oon the limit of a par 3 anyway. Even in the summer and playing downhill it is a good hit and the hole itself is very, very tight with trouble left and right. Again laying up is the preferred choice for many so it isn't an issue.

Royal Ascot had a couple on the old course but that was more necessity as there were a lot of cross over areas. On our current layout we don't have anything defined but the 1st does play into the rising sun which at this time of year makes it very hard to see once it has left the club and so it is an unwritten rule that the group on the green will putt out and then ball spot
