After reading about Steve Williams, I realise that I do not fully understand how much input a caddie will have in a game?

I see the money some of them can earn, so I would not under estimate their importance... so do they determine, which club at each and every shot, or do they only give advice when asked, or is it somewhere in the middle?

I think it depends on the Player and also the Caddy.
I suspect Lee Westwood takes a decent amount of advice from Billy Foster.
Mostly the Player will rely on the Caddy for yardages unless the Caddy is new or inexerienced then the Player will probably do it themselves. Reading putts is mostly down to the player although the caddy often gets involved too.
Trying to persuade the PLayer to hit a certain shot when the shot the PLayer wants to hit is the wrong choice is one of the biggest problems I guess.....

All in all, the better/more experienced a Caddy is, the more the PLayer will seek advice from them.

Thanks Imrug, some seem to talk all the time whilst others don`t seem to say a word

Don't underestimate the role of a top caddy. They are part club lugger, part big brother and part sports psychiatrist. A top guy will keep their player positive even when things are going well, stop them taking on stupid shots (still think McIlroys caddy should have stopped him going for it by the tree root) and keep them focussed on good tempo and action. A lot of them are decent players in their own right. They are exceptionally good with yardages and basically are there to do what they can to help their man win. That said, the guys at the bottom end do struggle, as it costs a fair whack to travel, stay etc at these events and many have to pay their own way.

did anyone see Billy Foster on I think the 17th tee yesterday, he even had Keegan Bradley laughing like fook, all 6 of them on the tee pissing themselves laughing. Was great too see

Zzzzz.

Excuse me but how much money has he earned?

And how much money has Tiger earned since they parted company, bet Steve has made more cash than Tiger since they parted, simple isn't it Doh......

So stevie jumped ship when tiger went off the boil. If you think tigers wins had any thing to do with Williams you are dreaming. He was the best golfer there has ever been. Any one could have carried his bag. Williams lucked out. Like winning the lottery. Since then, he has got a very big gob about it, and needs to show a bit of respect to his former employer.
