Caddies anyone?

Caddies. Ever use one? One of my most enjoyable rounds was at Prestwick with a caddie who was a former commodities trader who did it to "keep fit." He was a good companion throughout the round, but earned his £50 tip with his advice on one hole. Keep in mind, I never played the course before and was faced with a shot up a hill to the crest and undiscovered country beyond. I wanted to walk up and survey the hole, but he said don't bother sir. "Just aim for that steeple yonder and hit a 175 yard shot." I did so and when we crested the hill and saw the green below I was amazed. My ball was in the middle about 10 feet from the hole! Caddies rule!

If I ever achieve my ambition of playing the Old Course again I'm going to have a caddy. Played it in the 60s with a mate who was at St. Andrews University & his advice was invaluable. It would be £50 well spent.

Agreed. in addition to reading greens and aiming, mine was invaluable in navigating the confusing layout around the 9th - 13th hole. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/golf/4660481.stm

Caddies can be great, used one myself a few times and last time at TOC. He gave me all the lines off the tee and club selection, some of which though i know you can hit it left on most holes its still quit difficult on a blind shot which some are. Ive even caddied a couple of times when the club has had a lot of demand with visitors during the summer months.

But, nothing makes my heart sink more than arriving at the course to play a few holes that seeing loads of four balls with caddies teeing off in front on me.

so its a bit of a double edged sword sometimes.
