A last Hurrah at the old club today. Membership expires at midnight.
Never the greatest course but it served its purpose and we, mostly, enjoyed it.
I think i was a member for 7-8 years, Fragged for a couple less and CVG since the dawn of time, well about 20...
Course looked in good nick to be honest, apart from one tee box that was invaded by badgers last summer and has had nothing done to it except rolling the damage flat.
The round didn't bode well with a double to start but the I got straight back on track with a 2 at the next.
Steady and unspectacular front 9 of 41(+6) for 16 points, one behind CVG but, more importantly, ahead of Fragger!
Onto the back 9 and a level par 35 saw me in with a 76 for 38 points, winning the day from Fragger on 34 and CVG on 32.
Certainly my best round of the year with 4 birdies including 2 x 2's.
What it also highlights, to me anyway, is how much more forgiving AP is compared to our new home at Whipsnade.
Several shots today would have been in bunkers or blocked out from the green at The Zoo. An extra 700 yards off the back tees isn't going to be a walk in the park either, although par/SSS does move from 70/69 to 73/73.
Good to finish with a decent round though
Thinking back, when i first played there as a visitor in about '96 I shot 76 as well....
I shall miss some aspects of the place but i won't miss others...
The waist high rough for one!
So, onward bound to pastures new.
It's going to be a journey!
