Hi guys, looking for some advice

about 2 years ago I decided I wanted to take up golf, I bought a really cheap set of 20 year old clubs from gumtree and spent most of my money on lessons. In the last few months I've managed to finally break 100 and treated myself to a new driver and fairway woods, callaway razr x black driver and callaway v series 3 and 5 wood (never had woods previously and my driver was a 7degree 20 year old club that was incredibly hard to hit). I bought them from AG second hand

Im now looking to get a putter and my own set of irons. I think I'm going to go down the pre owned route as it seems much better value for money.

I'm basically looking for a few recommendations on a putter and set of irons, the more forgiving the better and something I could have for the next 5+ years

further to this, if there's any advice on buying used clubs (Ie on golf bidder, what's a decent 'condition' to get them in for good value?

thanks!

At the moment, you can't go far wrong looking in a few local American Golf stores with their double discount sets. It should be possible to try a few in their net (see if you can use their simulator) and see what suits best

Depending on where you are, you can search eBay by the area around you, so you could go and have a look before you buy irons, I still buy second hand for most things. Wedges are nice to have from new due to the grooves. What about a good set of AP1's? Or the Mizuno JPX EZ? My father bought a set of used pings that have stood the test of time!

Would recommend the second hand route and going to AG or similar to use their simulator. I bought a second hand set of Ping g25's about 9 months ago for £230 from Nevada bobs and they are brilliant. Top quality clubs for a low price.

Have a look at some reviews online for some clubs. Benross make great performing clubs for about £330 a set brand new. Pretty low spinning but if its distance you are after they are huge.

Would definitely suggest trying them all though and find what you feel comfortable hitting.

After using the JPX EZ 16 for a few weeks, I can recommend them. They have given me more height but still have a penetrating flight, if that makes sense. Easy to hit and launch. To be honest I don't think there are any bad GI irons about these days. Better to try a few out for yourself if you can.

Problem is 'buddy' what suits us may not suit you, a mate of mine has just bought my very tidy set of 'Wilson MDS Fatshafts' off of me, I couldn't hit em for jack diddly when I owned em, he on the other hand smashes em a country mile, I then bought his almost new set of 'Speedblades' off of him as he had absolutely no confidence in em whatsoever, I on the other hand absolutely love em, never before have I hit my irons so well...

Second hand route is fine if you are average height - potentially not so good if you are short (need flat lie clubs, maybe a little shorter) or very tall (upright lie, longer clubs)

You can easily get lofts/lies and lengths adjusted at a good independent pro shop. Depending where you are in the country, I can recommend two good independent pro's (not affialted to a golf club, just have their own fitting studios with launch monitors etc.) in the Midlands area!

Unless forged loft/lie cannot really be adjusted easily. Given most SI / GI clubs are cast this will most likely be the case

go on eBay put in "golf iron sets " when they land put in drop box "ending soonest"

There are some very nice irons on this site all makes at really good prices because they are a couple of years old most have NO bids on so make an offer.

read the description carefully so no shocks they have to be honest look at feedback.
do the same for putter.

always liked the ping answer putters from the 90s the copper ones.

take your time choosing don't rush you have 3 months until season starts.
