Buying clubs from the states

Know what you mean about the kids. Some little git tried to rob me in september when I was walking down to the chinese takeaway, a little 9st weed against an 18st bloke, no chance, funny thing was he called the law after I gave him a little hiding.

Always look on the bright side.....and all that

I hate the little pricks these days . As much as i used to hang around in a group as such, we all had a bit of respect. eg let an old girl have your seat on the bus etc.

This has to be the funniest post yet. Maybe it wasn't meant to be funny but it made me laugh. Realgolfer I see you have one aswell, your wife's half sister's set father's dogs' baby sitter. Pissing myself at that one and Mad what happened to compassion?

Here's what you do.

Befriend someone who lives in the states. (My wife's, 1/2 sister's, uncle in law's dogs baby sitter)......that sort of thing.

Ask 'em to buy you a nice set of clubs, get 'em to hit a few in the garden, make a couple a bit muddy, chuck them in the post to "ye olde engerlund". Chuck em the fee for a lapdance or giant portion of doughnuts.

If they're used, you won't get taxed, it'll just be a gift from uncle sam.

Now then.....was that the inland revenue knocking at the door?

Dave

Not strictly true i'm afraid. There is a threshold on gifts from abroad - something like £250 I believe.

On a broader note you can obtain the exact duty code and rate for clubs from one of the Inland Revenue sub-sites. Worth remembering is that you will also be hit with VAT on the gross total which means the clubs would have to be dirt cheap to make it worthwhile. I certainly wouldn't even entertain the idea on a product that can be so easily forged without having a trusted friend stateside.

I did this kind of research a few years ago as I wanted to get a guitar in the same way. It just turned out to be too much hassle and not worth the risk.

There's nothing to stop you from going out there yourself and getting them if there's enough margin in it then claiming you already owned them on the way back it(risky but viable- mud and scratches might help) but even on a top line set and taking a bargain bucket cattle class flight I would have thought it was too close to call.

You may be able to claim stateside VAT (sales tax)back if you make sure you get an internation tax exemption form at the point of purchase but i'm guessing your looking more at web-sales rather than retailers.

I might consider taking a punt on some ex-gracia goods but golf clubs wouldn't be one of them.

Wow. I'm a newbie on this forum. I joined coz I like the mag and am more than a little keen on golf. I'll be in the states this year so the thread interested me. Is this thread typical?

I'll give it a few more days and see...

Welcome. What part of Dorset are you based in CFH? The missus and spend a bit of time down there on holidays from time to time. We stay in a small village not far from Ryme Intrinseca. Love the area, it's people and scenery. Some of the golf courses aren't half bad either- cheddington court deserves a special mention for example.

I live near Poole, and yes we are blessed with some good courses. Haven't played Cheddington - Came Down is my favourite locally.

Know it but haven't played it...yet.

Hope you enjoy the forum as much as I do,

You need to get on the HM Revenue & Customs site, get to the VAT page and look for 'Valuation of imported goods for customs purposes, VAT and trade statistics'.

I've never used it but there's supposed to be a calculator for finding out what you have to pay.

I'd post the link but it's too long and won't work

ps what's got into you lot, pmt or cabin fever. if this keeps up I'm off to the moon - it's got some b*****d bunkers!

Good for you MWJ although I humbly suggest proceeding with caution. It only takes that little nine stone weed to be a bit handy with a blade and it's game over.

What SHOULD have happened is that the law should have turned up and compounded your little hiding with a rather large and sustained one. It's the only way as things have got out of control.

anyway..back to golf ( or more affectionately known as 'Fiddling while Rome burns')

Bought some balls from the states once, £50 odd for 3 doz, and got caned for about £30 in postage and tax. Never again.

If, on the other hand you happen to be out there then that is a different story. I normally go over in march, and you can bring back (untaxed) about £147 worth of stuff. Doesn't sound much, but if you use what you buy out there, then it is seen as second hand when you bring it back, and I have never had any problems. That said, BA will fly a bag with 14 clubs in it for free, but if you put two sets of irons in there, they may stuff you for excess bagage at £30 a kilo. Ouch. I have bought drivers, wedges and putters before, and this year will mainly be buying shoes. My putter was a good deal tho', about £120 for a brand new Scotty.

What was it in particular you were looking to buy? What is the price difference compared to here? If its off an internet site from the states them most places over here will price match, could that be an option???

Wow lads.... I only wanted to know how much it costs. I now have a diploma in importation tax, a lesson in politics and i know realgolferuk's family tree. I love this forum.

Yeah,I'll grant you that Brother Medwayjon, but apart from free medical service, etc, etc, etc....what 'as this government ever done for US?!!
