Buying a vinyl

Got all my kit in 1996 so not quite as old as you guys but it's still good stuff. 2 SL1200s (mk2s), Allen & Heath 202 mixer running to a Marantz PM66 from the record level running a set of B&W DM302 monitor speakers and a Technics SU-A900 run off the master level to a set of B&W DM603 floor stands. I used to also run a set of 602s but too much for the current house.
When it's in full flow the sound reproduction is awesome, since I changed to Ortofon Concorde carts (Stanton are too flaky with any static at all) the sound imaging has been unreal. Every pop and hiss is reproduced perfectly.

Sold my 1210's when our 2nd child was born. Had my music room perfectly set up with all my vinyl in Ikea storage units, decks on top runnning to a vestax mixer that I still use when djing, 2 Pioneer cdj's, beast of an old Yamaha amp, sony cd recorder and 4 speakers in each corner of the room. When everyone was out it sounded so crisp, loved spending a few hours in there making mix tapes/cd's.

Pretty much what I do now. Got it set up to run through the PC to record. I had to cut down on speakers though. My winter project is to build an all in one deck/mixer console with vinyl storage racks underneath.
The Technics amp is a beast for a domestic, non PA system, 100w per channel, runs the 603s perfectly. Never could get the hang of CD decks though, just doesn't feel 'real' enough for me.

Forgot to mention summat you have said. When we got the pioneer sound system, the sales guy bent my arm to buy to smaller speakers. He obviously knew his job. In essence he said get one up in each corner of your room and have it as surround sound, it took him about 30 seconds to realise he was talking to a village idiot. Anyway he mentioned about having a cable running from the back of the pioneer system to the back of the telly. In essence I had a surround sound system 30 yr ago not just for the hifi but the telly as well. Match of the day was just awesome.

All that quality sound was carried from the system to the speakers via a quality cable supplied by the National Coal Board. It's original use was as shot firing cable which carried the electrical charge from the battery to the explosive detonators.

Recently bought some Mackie studio monitors so that I can still have a mess about at home. Use Traktor now and a S2 which is so much easier but does lack the 'dj' feel, almost feels like cheating until it crashes!! I was late to switching to cdj's and only recently to laptop.

Got Traktor and its a good bit of kit if a bit of a cheat ;). I did try Reaktor but it was too complex.
For me, nothing replaces dropping the needle and running the platter back to find the lead in. That and a beat match are the two greatest feelings ever :D

When you get 2 tunes mixing perfectly its such a good feeling. Loved that when I used play on my decks.
