Bunkers - what is the sand spec for a PGA bunker?

I think on most courses that I have played, poor bunkers are due to a lack of maintenance rather than quantity of sand. Over time the sand gets compacted, by rain/footfall etc. If this never gets broken up you end up with the horrible skim of sand on the equivalent of your garage floor.

It never fails to amaze me how courses don't address this. Apart from the potential card wreck, it's also pretty dangerous. The most likely result is a low bladed wedge, rising up to head height, add this to a green side bunker near the clubhouse and you have plenty of targets in the firing line. Hopefully it only hits the green keepers Bentley...........

Royal Ashdown Forest has the best solution I have come across

I seem to remember that Jack insisted (one year - only!) that bunkers for his tournament be raked in such a way that grooves were left - so the lies encountered were very unpredictable! Caused quite a bit of chaos that year, but I'm certain that players would get used to it if more frequently done! Would certainly affect the approach of players who currently think 'front bunker is a good result'!

Evil bunkers - and the threat/decisions they provide make for some of the best holes - a couple on TOC, several on Wentworth West and one in/at Christchurch (NZ) spring to mind as 'gems' (or, at least, truly memorable) because of them!
