Broadband Speed is Very Slow

My Sky broadband download speed is 2.54Mbps as I type (it was 0.6Mbps 10 mins ago when my wife was also online). We are both connecting wirelessly. But still - this is grimly slow - why?

How can I improve things?

And try wired connection just to rule out the wireless variable!

Unplug your router from the mains for a couple of minutes and plug it back in. Try a wired connection (if possible) failing that contact Sky but good luck with that.

Sky changed our router a few months ago because I complained about the slow speed and the fact the signal kept dropping off. After a few tests they agreed to swap it. Speed is still not great but slightly better. They will swap but if the line is not good you may just be stuffed. There is no way I could watch live sport via broadband at home for example.

For all the advancements technology has made getting decent broadband to many houses is still pretty poor. The idea that strength reduces the further away you are from the junction box is like a series circuit in electricity. Crackers. Unlocking that conundrum will open up fast broadband to many more people.

Move closer to the exchange?? If you are on fibre to the cabinet and live in the sticks then you are mostly stuffed for the time being.

We live in a commuter town 35miles from Central London. I'll go plug my lappie into the box using a cable.

Just checked cable-connected - 10Mbps. And that's OK. So it's my wireless. Currently sitting beside the router I also am getting 10Mbps wirelessly - so it must be where I work upstairs.

That is a load of rubbish, to put it mildly!

There are 11 properties with the same postcode as ours and they are up to four miles apart. Three of us are on different telephone exchanges and ours is copper wire all the way from the exchange which is three miles away, with less than 30 phone lines. I have just completed the BT Wholesale Broadband Test and it shows 2.2 Mbps.

Good advice, plug in to see what speeds you get on the wire.

Also I don't know if it's a myth but if you reboot your router at least once each day for the next few days its supposed to help.

If you are only that far from London do you have the fibre option. The upgrade is really worth it.

Only 0.2 Gbs really gig, that's pretty quick for home broadband.
