No disrespect to the man, he was Goal scorer but when it comes to him talking Golf , Stick to football imo ..

Because having to suffer him drivel on , makes for brutal viewing

yeah why have a ex footballer hosting a golf tournament.

i have to say that i wasnt impressed with the bbc's coverage of this and it just spoiled the golf a bit

i watched the live feed direct from amen coner which was fantastic coverage, however to be fair to the beeb it wasnt there coverage it is us televisons coverage that auntie uses

I don't mind G.L.
Steve Ryder however, for me, would be the icing on the cake.
Steve is the man i.m.o. and real golf fans would probably prefer him (unless I'm wrong). I think the idea with G.L. is to get the non-golfers "in" and watching.

Steve is like Bill McClaren , Murray Walker and Peter Alliss

And even Trevor Mcdonald whom made News at10 all of his own .

hmmm maybe but we would lose his insightful commentary, so probably no thanks!
That said i do think lineker was wooden, but was he much worse than Doogie Donnelly? ........maybe a professional tv front man/woman would be better.

I think Gary Lineker is ok. As well as introducing and fronting the programme, it's his job to get the experts/pundits to give their opinion, which I think he does quite well. Constantly referring to the leaderboard is a bit annoying, maybe not his doing.

Some names have been suggested on here to present the show - Torrance, Monty etc. but how would they handle being out of their comfort zone, fronting and linking everything and asking all the questions? Probably not as easy as it may seem.

If the Beeb were to change I'd like to see Adrian Chiles give it a go. That would be amusing. Watching him on the One Show, constantly twitching, making sure everything runs in synch, checking his notes on the sly - quite funny at times.

Just to finish, I really used to like Steve Rider,(spelt correctly), hosting the golf, but similarly, I can't stand him doing the football on ITV! He's just not a football person in my view.

Played at Turnberry last year in the BMW Cup Lineker was guest speaker,He was so boring talking about football i noticed some tables talking to themselves,Think he should stick to football.Steve Ryder should still be the man and Peter Alliss is to golf, what Murray Walker is to motor sport it would just not be the same without them. :)

Ken would make a great presenter no doubt.

I think I am guilty of being too harsh over Big ears but it has to be said that he is just not as good as the host should be and thats as fair as I care to be.

Completely disagree, Donnelly was/is a natural studio host, and when they had him as the post round interviewer some years ago he excelled, something Havel and Shane have no chance of doing.

I think some of the pros were very helpful to the coverage after getting such wooden questions after a round.

A broader audience, hence why they canned Alex Haye and promoted Ken to the #2 slot and we have Andrew thingy doing commentary from time to time.
The BBC feel the need to make things hip in order to attract a larger audience and they've screwed up the golf because of it.
I hark back to the days when Clive Clark would provide excellent on-course commentary for Alliss, Haye and Critchley in the commentary box.

Steve Rider had no history in golf before he got the job, so to use that against Lineker is unfair.

I didn't particularly rate Rider when he first started in the job, but he got bloody good over the years.

I think Lineker is getting better too.

Ken Brown is my hero, and I think the on course stuff he does is fantastic. But he's not the man to lead the ship.

As mentioned earlier, Lineker's job is to let the less informed viewers understand enough to keep watching. And I'm sure he pulls in a few extra grannies etc to the viewing figures.

The BBC haven't got any top class generic sports presenters around, who could walk into the job. So I vote to stick with Lineker.
